“Finding a ‘Safe Place’ Where You

Can Encounter God”

Psalm 63

    July 21, 1996

·         This psalm was probably a standard song in the ______________ services of the early church as they often gathered in hidden places to worship, fearful of authorities.

·         The psalm is by David, probably after an attempted coup by ______________, his son.

·         We can deal with the loss of all of our outer _______________, but if we have an empty ____________ world, we are without hope!

1.     Safe Place #1:  The _____________________

“I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. {3} Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.”      Psalms 63:2-3 (NIV)

¨       David had a lifetime of experience at finding sanctuaries:

                        As a shepherd

                        As a soldier

                        As a king in Jerusalem

                        Now, in the desert

¨       Circumstances:  overwhelmed by people and powers that are _____________ than he. Overcome by ___________.

¨       There is a particular kind of weariness that comes from people who try to _______________ our world.

¨       Two Important Truths Come Into Focus in the Sanctuary:

(1)    I Need to Keep My _________________ – The Power and Glory of God

(2)    I Need to Remember the ________________ of God’s Love For Me

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. {23} They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

 Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)

2.     Safe Place #2:  The __________________

“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

        {7} Because you are my help . . .”     Psalms 63:6-7a  (NIV)

¨       On what do you dwell when you put your head on your pillow?

¨       It is easy to simply rehearse the ___________ and deepen the _______________ about your losses.

¨       The Better Choice:  God’s _________________ in Past Times of Crises

“No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:5 (NIV)

3.     Safe Place #3:  The _______________ of God

“. . . I sing in the shadow of Your wings.”   Psalm 63:7 (NIV)

¨       Central Thought:  __________________

¨       It is in a feeling of being protected that you can feel free to ___________, ______________, and ____________.

”O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.”

Matthew 23:37 (NIV)

4.     Safe Place #4:  The Strong ___________ of God

“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.”    Psalms 63:8 (NIV)

¨       Central Thought:  God’s _______________ and ____________________.

¨       Why do we find it so difficult to say, “I’ve lost my _________________.”?

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, {39} neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)
