//Call to Worship: Psalm 22:25-28
Observations:
According to the Abrahamic promise, the land will be possessed by whom the Lord determines. The exiled Israelites will posses their promised land.
In keeping with the destruction of Edom, Mount Esau will be ruled by another nation.
Introduction: There are certain literal fulfillments of Obadiah to the original hearers and recipients of the prophecy. A real nation of Edom suffered the consequences of their pride. A real nation of Israel experienced the restoration of God’s promises. And yet, there remains some future fulfillment in these prophetic words of Obadiah in which these nations and lands will ultimately experience the rule of God’s kingdom. However, there is other implication to these Scriptures. It is the gospel according to Obadiah. What I am simply alluding too is that the New Testament message of good news that was preached by the apostles was a gospel according to the Scriptures. The gospel that they preached in accordance to was the cannon of Jewish holy writings. What we know as the Old Testament. With that emphasis my goal today is to preach to you the good news of the Kingdom according to Obadiah.

The Gospel According to Obadiah

God

He speaks with authority.
He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
He is just
He is jealous as a faithful promise keeper. Preserving His word.
His is holy and so is His dwelling place.
He is a rescuer.
He is Lord over the nations. He is not only the God of Abraham , Issac, and Jacob… but he is the creator God to whom all peoples of the earth will answer to.
Transition: The gospel according to Obadiah reveals to us that God is the holy, authoritative speaking King who is the rescuing righteous judge over all nations. But it also reveals to us something of the nature of humanity.

Humanity

Like Judah we have been taken captive by an enemy. Sin has held us in bondage since birth and we are incapable to achieve our own rescue. We are in need of a Savior in order to be restored.
Like Edom we have been deceived by our pride. That original sin has caused us to trust in our own wealth, wisdom, power. Our sin has deluded us to think that we can find salvation through means other than God. Our pride has deluded us to depend on our own security and allies to provide the ultimate needs of our souls. With our misplaced since of sovereignty we think we control our own destinies, and have given ourselves over to justifying our aloofness and hate and greed and vengeance.
And like these nations we are all subject to the full consequences of our unbelief. We stand spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins. We walk according to the course of this world. We walk according to the passions of our flesh and are by nature worthy of only the wrath of God.
Transition: If this were the end of the story we would be a hopeless people, but the gospel according Obadiah also points us to the person and work of jesus Christ.

Christ

He is the Savior who has gone up to Mount Zion to achieve the holy requirements of God and make escape possible.
He is the promised one of Israel that through Him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.
Through His death burial and resurrection Jesus proved to be the ultimate Savior that Israel, Edom, and all the nations needed to truly be reconciled with our holy Creator.

Response

Possess their possession, (17, 19 <3x>, 20 <2x> ownership, Rights to an inheritance.
The response of Israel was to Possess what God has promised.
II Peter 1:3-4
2 Peter 1:3–4 ESV
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
b. What has God promised? Am I in possession of these promises?
John 1:11-13
John 1:11–13 ESV
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 3:16
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
iii. John 14:1-3
John 14:1–3 ESV
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
iv. John 16:13
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
v. John 16:33
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
vi. John 20:30-31
John 20:30–31 ESV
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Point: Because of Christ we can respond in faith and be partakers of these great and precious promises… any many many more!
Conclusion: Considering the holiness of God and the rebellion of humanity it nearly seems unfair or unjust for God to offer a way of escape to sinners. But God has shown great grace and mercy toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. God has taken the initiative to offer to those who will believe the free gift of eternal life. He has offered reconciliation and friendship with Himself. Perhaps today is the day that you have realized this amazing truth and today you would like to respond to God’s grace by trusting in Christ alone and receive the forgiveness of your sins? Perhaps today, you have been reminded of the great love in which He has loved us and it has encouraged, challenged, or equipped you to extend that love and forgiveness to others? Perhaps you recognize that you were once an enemy of God and He has in Christ forgiven you, and so now you can forgive those who have greatly offend you. May we all be reminded that, The kingdom shall be the Lord’s…

Is Jesus king of my life today?
