Slide: Why didn’t he stay?

Why didn’t he stay?

Wouldn’t it have been better if he stayed around?
Lets look at the answer to the question in John 16. Please stand with me.
John 16:7–13 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Advantage: be better off, gain something, have something you wouldn’t have before.
I Don’t believe the disciples were thinking they would be better off without Christ.
Notice verse 6… sorrow has filled your heart.
Jesus, in flesh, is only in one place at a time.
If Jesus didn’t leave, we wouldn’t receive the gift of the spirit.
Slide: Verse 8 - Sin, righteousness, judgment
John 16:8 ESV
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Convict is to present or expose facts.
Convince of the truth.
Slide: Verse 9 - sin
John 16:9 ESV
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
H.S. points out sin to bring repentance leading to salvation.
It is a sin not to believe in Christ. Those who don’t believe are condemned.
John 3:18; 15:22, 24
Slide: Vs 10 - righteousness
John 16:10 ESV
10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
Pharisees accused Jesus of blasphemy - claiming to be God.
“Unrighteous” to call yourself God.
Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.
Deut 21:23
Deuteronomy 21:23 ESV
23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
Gal 3:13
Galatians 3:13
Galatians 3:13 ESV
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
Christ was vindicated by his resurrection and later ascension into heaven.
He was not cursed, unrighteous, He was God!
Slide: Vs 11 - judgment
John 16:11 ESV
11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Jesus death was a condemnation of satan.
Jn 12:31; Col 2:15
Devil, who held the power of death, is defeated.
He is judged.
God has the power to judge.
Don’t look to the devil, but look to God who is judge.
Spirit convicts/exposes facts.
John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Our last advantage? Spirit guides us to all truth!
In Chapter 17, Jesus prays to God that the disciples, and all believers to follow, would be sanctified in the truth: your word is truth.
Sanctify the mind in truth of God’s word.
Bible Study magazine article: brainwashing.
What do we do now? Pull a thread for you beginning in Genesis 1...
Genesis 1:28 ESV
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 9:1 ESV
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
Genesis 9:7 ESV
7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
Genesis 26:3–4 ESV
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
John 12:31–32 ESV
31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
Jesus reclaims the nations… and fulfills the promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
GO - Be fruitful and multiply!
