Focus verses
The Jewish leaders read the Scriptures so they could have eternal life, but they didn’t realise that the Scriptures are all about Jesus.
For example, we have been doing some corporate Bible reading...
Proverbs - all about wisdom - Jesus is the wisdom of God
Genesis
When Abraham offered Isaac, God’s provision of a ram in Isaac’s place is a type of Jesus, who died in our place
Joseph being rejected by his brothers and exalted by Pharaoh is a type of Jesus who was rejected by His own people and exalted by God
Exodus
The Passover lamb is a type of Jesus, whose blood causes God’s wrath to pass over us
The Rock, which Moses struck so that water came out is a type of Jesus, whom God struck on the cross, so that we could have life
To have eternal life, we must be willing to come to the one that Scriptures are all about - Jesus!
Who can come to Jesus?
Everyone can come to Jesus.
All are invited:
What does it mean to come to Jesus?
It means to believe in Him
Notice that “comes to” and “believes in” are used interchangeably.
In the original Greek, both “comes” and “believes” are in the present participle.
This means that continuous action is in view.
It is more literally “He who is coming to Me shall never hunger, and he who is believing in Me shall never thirst”.
Coming to Jesus is not just something we have done, it is something we must continue to do if we will continue to have spiritual life.
That’s why Peter said to those who had already come to Jesus...
As Christians, do you know one way we continue to come to Jesus?
By ministering one to another!
Jesus said this about the day of judgement...
Who are Christ’s brethren?
A true relationship with God is both vertical and horizontal!
In order to come to Jesus, He must be our number one priority:
He doesn’t mean that we must literally hate others.
He means that no one else can share His place in our lives.
We must love Him more than we do anyone else, even our own families:
Coming to Jesus also means that we are willing to say goodbye to sin in our lives:
Why do people come to Jesus?
Because they hunger and thirst for God
Every person has a God shaped hole that can only be satisfied by God.
When we come to Jesus, He brings us to God.
Jesus said “you are not willing to come to me that you may have life”.
Jesus gives us life, and this life is having a relationship with God and with Jesus Christ:
Because they have come to the end of themselves
They are fed up with doing life their way and realise that they need God’s help:
Christianity if not about us striving to please God by our own efforts.
It is about actively cooperating with what God is doing in us.
For strength through life’s challenges
To give thanks
When Jesus cleansed ten lepers we read...
Don’t be someone who complains.
Be someone who gives God thanks!
Because they need God to fix their problems
Notice this woman’s persistence.
She didn’t give up on what she wanted from God. Follow her example, be persistent in prayer!
To be cleansed of their sins
Notice we have come to the heavenly Jerusalem.
Heaven is our home.
In Christ, we have assurance of a better future.
But notice that by coming to Jesus, we have come to “the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things that that of Abel”.
Abel was killed by his brother Cain, and his blood cried out to God for vengeance.
But blood of Jesus doesn’t cry out for vengeance.
It cries out for mercy and forgiveness.
His blood was shed in our place so that our sins could be forgiven.
When you don’t feel worthy to approach God, remember the blood of Jesus!
Don’t go by your feelings, go by your faith in the blood of Jesus!
