My Goal is

“Do not sin”
· Is this a reasonable life goal?
· Hypocrite – pretender (ac an actor) –
o Chapter before closes: “If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” ( ESV)
· Living in sin. (unrepentant sin lifestyle)

Jesus Is

Jesus is My advocate

{parakletos} A person who acts as a spokesperson or representative for someone else’s policy.
First, why do we need an advocate?
God’s Standard of Sin:
Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength
Love your neighbor as yourself.
“For the wages of sin is death.” (hell)
Our advocate
Tells God, “This one belongs to you. This one is forgiven.”

Jesus is My Propitiation

{hilasmos} The means of appeasing the wrath and gaining the will of an offended person; especially with respect to sacrifices for appeasing angered deities.
The wages of sin is death.
God didn’t simply agree to ignore our sin. Someone had to pay for it.
Jesus said, “I will pay for it.”
When Jesus said, “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing.” MAYBE HE WAS ALSO TALKING ABOUT US.
When Jesus said, “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing.” MAYBE HE WAS ALSO TALKING ABOUT US.
“Not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Salvation is for all, even those who will NEVER accept Christ.
(If Christ paid the price for all, why will some still go to hell?)

Therefore, I should

1 John 2:3 ESV
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
Know him
o I can know – assurance of our salvation.
§ There is a test. We are able to have assurance of salvation.
o Know him – relationship with God through faith in Christ.
Some people are experts of knowledge, but this is talking about a personal relationship with God through Christ Jesus.
§ Some people are “experts of knowledge” (I’ve read so much about him)
§ This is talking about personal relationship (I know him personally)
Keep his commandments
o Changed character, changed life
Obedience doesn’t bring justification – it is however the result of it.
· Difference in salvation by faith alone vs “works based” faith
o Works – You never really know if you are good enough.
o Faith alone – You have assurance HOWEVER either you are saved or you’re not.

Righteous Contrast

· If you say “I know him but don’t keep his commandments
o You are a liar
o The truth is not in you
· If you DO keep His commandments
o The Love of God is perfected in you
Beautiful action of Christ interceding on your behalf to God saying, I know she is struggling to do right, but she believes in me. She is counted as holy.”
o This inner peace that you just know that God loves you.
· Last two sentences need to be understood together
o “By this we may know that we are in Him.”
§ Points to this standard of life
1 John 2:6 ESV
whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
Whoever says he abides in Him (Jesus) ought to walk in the same way as he walked.
§ Judge a tree by its fruit.
Talk is cheap.
