Romans 1:1–7 ESV
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Message of Romans 1. The Origin of the Gospel Is God

What we have to share with others is neither a miscellany of human speculations, nor one more religion to add to the rest, nor really a religion at all. It is rather the gospel of God, God’s own good news for a lost world.

1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Notice that the prophets are called his prophets. Paul is not speaking of men of vision in general, men who by their innate abilities could discern the signs of the times. He is speaking of men who belong to God, the vehicles of his message. When a promise is given through (not “by”) such men, then clearly it is the promise of God.

Jeremiah 31:31–34 ESV
31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Concerning His Son
God’s gospel = about Jesus = His Son
- Calvin

This is a remarkable passage, by which we are taught that the whole gospel is included in Christ, so that if any removes one step from Christ, he withdraws himself from the gospel.

if we change Jesus we destroy the gospel…!

And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Ezekiel 34:23–24 ESV
23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the Lord; I have spoken.

The Message of Romans 3. The Substance of the Gospel Is Jesus Christ

It seems then that the two expressions ‘according to the flesh’ and ‘according to the Spirit’ refer not to the two natures of Jesus Christ (human and divine), but to the two stages of his ministry, pre-resurrection and post-resurrection, the first frail and the second powerful through the outpoured Spirit.

Resurrection
dead - firstfruits

The idea here, then, is not that Jesus was “declared” or “shown to be” at the resurrection what he was all along, namely, the eternal Son of God. Rather, the point is that Jesus was “appointed” to be God’s Son in power at the resurrection of the dead. He was exalted to a level of power and authority that he did not have previously.

not about nature but about stages pre & post resurrection

Jesus had to take on flesh and enter into the old age in order to inaugurate the new age that is characterized by the Holy Spirit. The contrast between the flesh and the Spirit is quite similar conceptually to Paul’s remarks about the humiliation and exaltation of Christ in Phil. 2:6–11. Paul does not disdain the humiliation of Christ. It is a stage that is, however, left behind upon his exaltation. The age dominated by the flesh is one of weakness, while the age of the Spirit is one of power.

take flesh for old age new age of spirit

Jesus Christ Our Lord - !!

The lordship of Jesus as Messiah flows naturally from what Paul has just written.

Romans 14:11 ESV
11 for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
Philippians 2:10 ESV

The Gospel of God: Romans The Gospel of God (1:1c–6)

Romans is not at all the result of the theological insight of Paul, one of the most educated Jews in first century Palestine, but it is a message that comes from the mind of God, with the power to change lives.

Prayer

E.N.D.
Exalt God in relation to the Biblical truths that were just taught
Oh God how we exalt you for your mercy and grace upon us for granting to us the power of your transforming Spirit through which we can understand and believe your prophesied word of the coming Messiah. Jesus Christ our Lord who has defeated the weaknesses of sinful flesh and gained our victory in the power of that same spirit. We thank you that we too have this promise of resurrection and life eternal with you forevermore.
Name the Biblical principles preached and ask God to help the local church body to obey these truths
Will you help us to claim personally and proclaim publically your gospel which Paul has heralded to us today.
Draw people to the cross of Christ by proclaiming hope and help in the person and work of Christ for salvation and sanctification
Lead us also ever to the cross of Christ which is a stumbling block of weakness to those who are perishing but a beacon of hope and help for those seeking His power in salvation and sanctification.

Benediction
