Introduction

Greetings...
One of the greatest travesties in the kingdom of Christ is the lack of joy and rejoicing that goes on.
God has made it clear that those whom follow Him should be “rejoicing always.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16 ESV
16 Rejoice always,
Philippians 4:4 ESV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
I’m convinced that the main reason for this lack of joy is a lack of really understanding the multiple reasons we have to rejoice.
With this in mind let’s examine our lesson today.

Joy Equals Rejoicing

Defining the word joy.

The most common Greek word for “joy” is the word “χαρά” or “chara” which is found 59 times in the New Testament.
This word is closely related to the Greek word “charis” (grace) and “charisma” (gift).
As Denny Diehl put it, “We might like to think of charis and charisma as that which produces joy; and chara as the response to a gift which is given.”1
I bring this thought up because there is a direct relationship between joy and gift.
In other words “We have or show joy in direct response to the value of the gift received.”2
The gift of a penny...
The gift of a hundred dollar bill...
The gift of a house...

The greater our joy the greater our rejoicing!!!
The greater our joy the greater our rejoicing!!!
So with that in mind why are we, as God’s children, supposed to “rejoice always?”
The reason we can “rejoice always”

Rejoice Always

What brings joy?

If rejoicing is based on joy and joy on gift then we must begin by looking at what gifts “should” bring joy to every child of God.
The gift of grace should bring joy to every child of God.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 3:23–24 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
The gift of knowledge concerning sin should bring joy to every child of God.
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Sin separates us from God and creates a barrier between Him and us. However, if we understand sin and the magnitude of it we can use that knowledge to counter it.
The old saying “knowledge is power” is true and sin is no different. The more we understand sin the more we can avoid it and find joy in doing so.
Romans 7:7 ESV
7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
Romans
The old saying “knowledge is power” is true and sin is no different. The more we understand sin the more we can avoid it and find joy in doing so.
The gift of spiritual blessings should bring joy to every child of God.
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Spiritual blessings are the spiritual gifts from God that are only found in Christ.
Prayer for the forgiveness of sins ().
Peace that surpasses understanding ().
Steadfastness under trial ().
Safety in the kingdom ().
The gift of grace should bring joy to every child of God.
Romans 3:23–24 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
The gift of spiritual blessings.
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

Joy Brings Rejoicing

Think back to your life before you understood the magnitude of sin.
Knowing what the Father, Son, and Spirit have done to correct sin’s strangle on us should force us to be bursting with joy and focusing that joy into rejoicing towards our God.
Job 1:21–22 ESV
21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” 22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
1 Peter 1:3–9 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:3-

God’s gift of grace is so great that it is all we need to “rejoice always” and yet God has still provided us with many more reasons to have joy and rejoice.

Conclusion

Cindy Wyatt has a poem called “Rejoice Always.”
Rejoice, rejoice always
for great things God has done
He redeemed us and puchased our soul
with the blood of his own Son
Rejoice, rejoice always
because Jesus washed our sins away
He paid for them all on the cross
so we would not have to pay
Rejoice, rejoice always
for Jesus is the Master of everything
He gives us peace, not as the world giveth,
that makes our heart to sing
Rejoice, rejoice always
when you are persecuted for Jesus name
For great is your reward,
they treated the prophets of old the same
Rejoice, rejoice always
for the Lord is powerful and great
He saved us by his mercy
so we could enter the pearly gate
Rejoice, rejoice always
not that the devils are subject to you
but because your name is written in heaven
with the believers few

Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
