Intro:
Fathers, we have been entrusted with a precious and weighty responsibility. We are charged with overseeing our families and raising our children according to the Word of God for the glory of God. As a father of four children, ranging in age from 3 years old to thirteen, I am grateful for my children with whom God has blessed me. Yet, I am reminded continually of my own inadequacy for such a task.
Brothers, we are saved by grace. We grow spiritually by grace. We obey by God’s grace. Brothers, as fathers, we parent by God’s grace. We depend upon the Lord, so we may faithfully carry out this precious and weighty responsibility, called fatherhood. Fathers, in doing so, we teach our children by our words and our deeds. Our children learn how to know, love, and serve God by watching us and listening to us. So, what does it look like, to raise your children according to the Word of God for the glory of God? In , Solomon teaches his children in the same way that his father, David, taught him. He provides for us a model of how to teach our children.
Fathers, give your children lessons for their wellbeing (1-12). Teach them to:
Be a person characterized by “steadfast love and faithfulness” (3-4).
Trust God and not one’s own judgment, seeking to honor him in all things (5-6).
Fear God and turn from sin (7-8).
Honor God in your giving (9-10).
Endure God’s discipline and reproof (11-12).
