Beginnings

In the beginning we know God created. In the gospel of Mark we have seen some beginnings too (all within chapter 1 and still not done).
Beginning: Ministry of John the Baptist
Baptism of Jesus: Beginning of His ministry life
Temptation of Jesus
Beginning of preaching ministry of Jesus
The calling of disciples
Each of those were vital to the mission of God in which Jesus was sent to fulfill. John the baptist to prepare the way; the baptism to fulfill the prophesy and all righteousness; the temptation to show victory and to prepare for the difficult tasks ahead and then the preaching ministry of repentance and the kingdom of God!
In our message today we will see
As one having authority
As one showing authority
Results of having and displaying authority
Preparation is important isn’t it? Now there is the transition from the preparation to the teaching, from the calling to the proclaiming now. We should not prepare and then do nothing with the preparation, we are to apply what we have and put it to use.

I. As one having authority

The standard to this time is the scribes (sometimes they are Pharisees, Saducees or Essenes) received authority from a rabbi and would quote a rabbi, Jesus is now shakes things up for the status quo.
Let us read the entire section then will break it down to the two sections mentioned. As one having authority, and one showing authority.
Mark 1:21–22 NASB95
21 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 1:23–24 NASB95
23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
Mk1:
Mark 1:25–26 NASB95
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
Mark 1:27–28 NASB95
27 They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
Mk1:25-26
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
(below just for the handout not to be stated, said in delivery)
What can we learn about the teaching ministry of Jesus at this point from (vv.21-22)? (also see Mt4:12-13; Lk4:16-22)
The setting of His teaching (ask the question from (v.21)
Capernaum
Capernaum is the first public teaching even for Jesus in the gospel of Mark. Capernaum is NW shore of Galilee where Jesus lived
Synagogue on the Sabbath
His teaching in the synagogue showed he was one with authority. He will prove His authority in the scriptures to follow, but we need to know, recognize Jesus pattern. Sabbath day, Jewish custom was to be in the synagogue.
Matthew 4:12–13 NASB95
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
There is still more to glean from, Luke give a great description of Jesus teaching ministry in the synagogue
Luke 4:16–17 NASB95
16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
Luke 4:18–19 NASB95
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:20–21 NASB95
20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:22 NASB95
22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
Luke shows
Jesus quotes from prophet Isaiah chapter 61, so there is the illustration
Jesus then says that it is fulfilled, so here is the application
The results were they were wondering or in wonder, other versions say, amazed, marveled
Jesus taught often in the synagogues in His travelling ministry, as did the pattern that Paul followed did the same.
Manner of His teaching (v.22; Mt7:28-29, 5:27-28)
I mentioned they were in wonder, or astonished, due to the manner of His teaching
I mentioned they were in wonder, or astonished, due to the manner of His teaching
Matthew 7:28–29 NASB95
28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
He said things different than what they were accustomed to, like “but I say . . . “
Matthew 5:27–28 NASB95
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
He was one who taught as “having authority” vs. as having authority from. The scribes had it from the rabbis in which they received their authority.
Jesus had the authority!
Mark 2:10 NASB95
10 “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic,
Authority to forgive sins!
Right from the beginning of Jesus ministry they, the people, the ones who claimed authority knew He was different. His message, His manner was different. Jesus did not just have different message and manner He proved, or showed His authority.

II. As One Showing Authority

Words can be powerful, but Jesus ministry was backed up by actions. Jesus actions were to prove who He is. Let us look at and breakdown this section
Mark 1:23–24 ESV
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Mk1:25-26
Mark 1:25–26 ESV
25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
Mk1:
What can we learn from these verses
When did this happen? Where did this happen
What happened?
Right after the quoting of Isaiah and the proclamation by Jesus comes the miracle (Jesus first one as noted by Mark). It happened in the synagogue on the Sabbath Day.
The demon, or demons since plural was used had nothing in common with Jesus but knew exactly who Jesus was.
The demon acknowledged Jesus humanity “Jesus of Nazareth”
The demon acknowledged Jesus deity “Holy One of God”
Another point to catch in this is found in (v.24) “have you come to destroy us?” Man can know who Jesus is, even have trembling fear, but still be lost
James 2:19 NASB95
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
Notice Jesus command (v.25); what is the command?
Mark 1:25 NASB95
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
In some versions it says, shut your mouth, or be quiet, be silent , hold they peace, it is the same phrase Jesus used to calm the waters in the storm.
Mark 4:39 NASB95
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
Jesus displayed His authority by His command, but let me go and talk about the demon (s) for just a minute
We do not know from this passage the origin of the demons, but it does acknowledge their reality, as should we, be it fallen angels or what does not change the fact they are!
According to Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary “There is more recorded demonic activity during Jesus’ life than any other time in biblical history.”
Jesus casting out of the demons was evidence of the coming rule/reign of God.
Matthew 12:28 NASB95
28 “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
The demons had to respond to the authority of Jesus and in this case it was a violent, loud cry that sent the man into convulsions as the spirit (demon) was leaving.
There are other instances similar in the Bible too that we will see another time.
Now do you wonder why Jesus quieted, shushed, told the demon to be quiet
Interesting fact: The silencing of the demons is in part of what is often called the “messianic secret” (see Mk8:30, 9:9)
The silencing of the demons is in part of what is often called the “messianic secret” (see Mk8:30, 9:9)
Mark 8:30 NASB95
30 And He warned them to tell no one about Him.
He told the apostles not to say anything about who He is
Mark 9:9 NASB95
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.
He told Peter, James and John not to say who He was.
Why? We are not given the reason, but can you make some assumptions?
That his ministry work would be ended before the appropriate time because of his teaching as one with authority and displaying the authority?
That people would continue to grow where Jesus could not go as He knew He had to do to all the villages to share the good news.
The most common belief was that Jesus kept His messiahship quiet for it would be misunderstood until it could be seen in the light of the cross and the resurrection.
A scripture to consider this point (Mk8:27-31, 33)
Mark 8:27–28 NASB95
27 Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
Mark 8:29–30 NASB95
29 And He continued by questioning them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And He warned them to tell no one about Him.
Mark 8:31 NASB95
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mark 8:33 NASB95
33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Now that brings us to the last point. The results, reaction to the to the spoken authority that was displayed by action.

III. Results of Displaying Authority

III. Results to Displayed Authority

Jesus spoke with authority, proving (displaying) His authority now we get to see the reason, or the results of the proven authority.
MK1:27-28
What were the results (v.27)?
What did they acknowledge?
What then was the end result?
We have been invited to look at a day in the life of Jesus and to the credit of the people there in the synagogue in Capernum, they listened to Jesus teaching, and they responded to His teaching with amazement and they acknowledged His authority too.
Jesus authority spread, and from fear came hope. People are going to start bringing others to Jesus in hope of Him healing. Do we do the same? Do we share the hope that we have in Christ with others that they may have their healing of sins?
In recognizing His authority it was different from other authorities
Inherited authority - that of a prince to be king due to birth
Delegated authority - A president/CEO, or of police officer, or centurion
Achieved authority - Professor, instructor due to education, experience, etc.
In those authorities it came from outside the person. With Jesus He always had the authority for He was the authority. (Mt28:18-19; Act10:42)
Jesus spoke of His authority
Matthew 28:18–19 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Then there is
Acts 10:42 NASB95
42 “And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.
So what did you learn today, what are you taking away with you from the teaching ministry of Jesus here today?
(below is for handout not to be said)
The start of the teaching ministry of Jesus was one that spoke of proven authority that had proven results. That work still has results today when we share it with others. Don’t miss out on the opportunities to share the One who has all authority to forgive sins and to give life full!
