Verse 25
The discussion abandons the sabbath and goes back the the discussion found verses 11-13.
Some the people recognized who Jesus is and recognized him as the one the leaders wanted to kill.
Why were they wanting to kill Him?
Notice the inquiry of the people
But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
Verse 26
Jesus is speaking publically yet the leaders aren’t saying a word. Wonder why? Remember the woman at the well and her reaction?
John
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
The people recognized that there are these intentions of the leaders, yet Jesus kept on teaching. Ever wonder about the innocence of the One that keeps on teaching in spite of the ridicule?
This is the first time in John’s gospel that in Jerusalem they are mentioning that Jesus in the Messiah.
Verse 27
The dilemma: They say they know where He came from and the Jewish tradition is they will not know where the Messiah will come from. The tradition says He will suddenly appear.
“See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.
Malachi
This is an example of thinking we know all and not studying the scripture.
Verse 28
Jesus is still teaching in the temple, yet still hearing what they are saying: He cried out, spoke louder, makes a point; perhaps so the priests that were standing off to distance could her Him.
Jesus states, “You know me and where I am from, but you don’t know the One who sent me.”
Jesus points out that the One who sent Him is TRUE.
What do you think that means?
God is Truth
God is Faithful
God is Dependable
God is the FOUNDATION for all that is good, true or desirable
His character is unchanging
Verse 29
“But I knew Him..”
“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Jesus substantiates His claim by the One Who Sent HIM.
Verse 30
Jesus’ time had not come. This is a reminder that God controls time. Humanity does not control time. We see this again in verse 44 and
Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.
John
He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ ”
My times are in your hands;
deliver me from my enemies
and from those who pursue me.
Verse 31
Many placed their faith in Christ.
Who would you say that Jesus is?
Begs the question: How much do you have to see before you believe?
Verse 32
The willingness on part of the crowd to go along with Jesus troubled the Pharisees. Temple guards would have been Levites who were commissioned by the temple chief priests as temple police. It is interesting to note that the temple chief priests and Pharisees were not always best of friends, but unite here.
Verse 33
Jesus announces His goal: being with the people for a short while, then going back to the Father.
Jesus recognized the struggle that was being caused. There was good and bad.
GOOD
I think Jesus recognized that He would never have a quiet day because of these leaders constantly badgering HIm
I think Jesus realized that He would not have to leave by force but would go back to the Father willingly
I think Jesus realized the persecution He faced would not exist in Heaven
BAD
The leaders are choosing their own fate.
Their repentance will be too late
“Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me.
Verse 34
If you do not accept Christ, you will be kept our of heaven.
“Those who hate to be where Christ is, in His word and ordinances on earth, are very unfit to be where He is going in His Glory in heaven; for indeed heave would be no heaven to them, such are the antipathies of an unsanctified soul to the felicities of that state.” Matthew Henry
Verse 35
Where does He intend to go?
Shows the ignorance and spiritual blindness of the people
Jesus said, “ I am going to the ONE who sent me.”
Christ’s sayings are plain to those that understand who He is, and difficult to those that choose to quarrel.
Verse 36
They wondered if Jesus might leave Israel altogether to win converts among the Jews dispersed throughout the Roman Empire.
Verse 37
There was a ritual observed as part of the Feast of Tabernacles each day that a priest carried a goblet of water from the Pool of Siloam, through the water gate, and into the temple court. The congregation would sing a variation of
Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.”
With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.
Isaiah
The priest would pour the water on the altar commemorating the Lord’s provision of water in the wilderness.
“Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”
So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
Numbers 20:
The feast would build toward a climactic convocation as seen in
For seven days present offerings made to the Lord by fire, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present an offering made to the Lord by fire. It is the closing assembly; do no regular work.
Leviticus 23:
It was during this time that Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice:
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.
John 7:37
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

Verse 39
John gives a clarifying commentary that the Living Water is the Spirit.
Verses 40-44
The division among the crowd remained. People discussed if Jesus was prophet or Christ.
