Memorial Day Definition
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.[1]
The holiday is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May,.
The holiday was held on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.
Began in 1865 to commemorate and remember those who died in the Civil war
Although decorating the graves of soldiers was a custom before then, it was here that it became National holiday, on the same day for the whole country
The Civil ware had been so severe that it seemed necessary to have a formal time to remember those who died it it.
over 750,000 soldiers from both sides died
By one estimate, the war claimed the lives of 10 percent of all Northern males 20–45 years old, and 30 percent of all Southern white males aged 18–40
More people died in the Civil War than in all other American Wars combined
As a side note, we should consider this: That we never do more damage in battle than when we battle ourselves
Think about that: Of all the wars that our nation has fought; the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Quasi War (with France) The Mexican-American War, The Spanish-American War, The Korean War, WW 1 and 2, and so many others… Yet the Civil War cost more American lives than all these combined
If only we as Christians would remember this:
But if we are united, then there is nothing we cannot accomplish
Remember
It is good to remember those who have died for our freedom
Now we celebrate Memorial day not just to remember those who died in the Civil War, but in all of our Wars
Those who died in WW 2 fighting against Hitler and his terror, to Vietnam, and those who are still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan
We should not take a great freedom for granted, or fail to remember what it cost.
Doing so helps to keep us thankful.
Doing so also helps to keep us mindful of the cost of war, when we consider our fights
Remembering is a biblical : God commanded a memorial day when He led the people out of Egypt
In Deuteronomy He tells us to remember the days of old
We should remember
He says to ask your father and he will show you
I think one of the failures of our society is we no longer expect our fathers to pass down the history and stories
We rely on schools and the government to do this for us
Yet,.
we require them to sterilize the lessons of the passion of feeling and faith
But God commits this responsibility to the “father’s and the Elders”
I can still recall my Uncle Luther telling me stories of the civil war - there was passion, and feeling
We Should Remember the Cloud of Witnesses
Those of faith who have gone on before us.
Hebrews Chapter 11 lists a number of great Heroes of faith
Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, David, Jephthae, The Porphets
We are reminded of those great feats that were accomplished for our good
And we are reminded of those who gave the ultimate price - and died in faith
We are reminded to remember them as witnesses
They are not gone, but have gone on before us
Let us not be discouraged in our Christian race
We should remember the Christians that have gone on before us, the Apostles and disciples of the book of Acts
God also Remembers
Malach
You don’t have to give your life in a war, or be crucified or stoned
Just live your life as one who “fears the Lord” and speak of Him often one to another
You are in His book of Remembrance - you are
They will be mine - says the LORD.
