2018-05-20 2 Pentecost 1 – The season of Easter = the 49 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost – From the Greek Πεντηκοστή (Pentēkostē ) meaning “50th“ – The Greek name for the Jewish festival of Shavuot (Feast of Weeks), described in Lev 23:15-21 – Aka the Feast of Harvest (Ex 23:16) and the Day of Firstfruits (Num 28:26) – Marked the wheat harvest – Commemorated the day God gave the Law from Mount Sinai 3 Shavuot and Ruth 1 – Each of the great Jewish festivals was associated with an OT book. At Shavuot , Ruth is read: – King David (Ruth’s descendant) was believed to have been born and died on Shavuot – Key events of Ruth occur at harvest-time – The numeric value of Ruth is 606, the number of commandments given at Sinai – The Jewish people entered the covenant on Shavuot , and Ruth entered the covenant – The theme of Ruth is hesed (loving-kindness), which is the theme of the Law 4 Entering the New Covenant 1 – The Spirit comes to God’s people – In Hebrew, wind = breath = spirit – Fire purifies (Zech 13:8-9) – The New Covenant – promised in the OT – is finally realized: – All God’s people will be prophets (Acts 2:17-18, quoting Joel 2:28-29) – God’s Law will be written on their hearts (Jer 31:33; c.f. Rom 2:15) – At Easter, God rescued His people; at Pentecost, they entered His covenant 5 The “Shy” Member of the Trinity 1 – The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity – A person, not a force – Spot-light ministry – Highlights Jesus – Highlights reality around us (and within us) 6 “Are you filled with the Spirit?” 1 – All Christians have the Holy Spirit… – God “set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” 2 Cor 1:22 (cf. Eph 1:13 and 4:30) – …but we are to seek to be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18) – “I leak” 7 Being filled with the Spirit 1 – Abide in Jesus (Jn 15:4) – Maintain a conversational relationship with Jesus, through His Spirit – Laubach’s “Game with Minutes” – Trust in the God that the Spirit shows you – Die to self, with the Spirit’s help – This Spirit-filled life is characterized by – The fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22; Jn 15:5) 1 2018-05-20 The fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22; Jn 15:5) – The power of the Spirit (Jn 14:12; c.f.
