Jesus wants us to understand him.....
There were some people that Jesus deliberately kept in the dark
Matthew 13:13 KJV 1900
Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Matthew 13:14 KJV 1900
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
Mark 7:14 KJV 1900
And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
Luke 12:56 KJV 1900
Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
John 3:10 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
II. Jesus wants us to understand his teaching
He discusses the parable of the Tares of the Field (and explains it in verses 36-43).
He then discusses more “Kingdom of Heaven” similes or analogies (vv. 44-46)…as in vv. 31-33. These similies emphasize the great value of the Kingdom of Heaven and also speak of the judgment that will come upon all me.
Matthew 13:51 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.
III. Jesus mildly rebuked his disciples for not understanding - Do not be offended. they did not, at times, understand his
teaching on the things that defile. The pharisees had criticized him and his disciples for eating without washing their hands......
The idea involved ritual uncleanness - (He wasn’t thinking of physical disease). Their idea was that you were made unacceptable to God when you ate with unwashen hands....
Jesus reply...(vv. 10)..…
(vv. 10, 17-20)..…
Matthew 15:16 KJV 1900
And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Jesus explanation vv. 15-20
Matthew 15:16
Matthew 15:17 KJV 1900
Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
b. teaching on the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Matthew 16:5-8
Matthew 16:9 KJV 1900
Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
Matthew 16:10 KJV 1900
Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
Matthew 16:11 KJV 1900
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
III. Sometimes understanding is delayed....do not be discouraged...
John 13:7 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
John 13:12 KJV 1900
So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
IV. Understanding is enhanced the more of the Scriptures we know....
John 8:43 KJV 1900
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Mark 12:24 KJV 1900
And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
They did not understand because they did not know the very Scriptures they had given their lives to, nor had they expereinced the power of God in their own lives. They were living an academic / theoretical life…Not a practical and personal relationship with God
Mark 7:14 KJV 1900
And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
