Deut
ii. contextual evidence
Ephesians 1:4–5 ESV
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
iii. NT evidence
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1. We inherit Eternity

2 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
i. Our inheritance: an eternal existence prepared 4 us
iii. NT Evidence
2 Corinthians 5:1–3 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.
2 Cor 5:1-
2 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

-Our inheritance: an eternal existence prepared 4 us
ii. Illust. love camping; don’t want 2 live in tent my whole life!
Eph

b. Got it, but don’t have it…yet

1. vs 14: “until we acquire possession of it”...already, but not yet

2. Illust. - bio dad died

-back 2 vs 11...
Ephesians 1:11 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

c. Predestination?

1. predestined inheritance, not a person

i. illust. : Darth Vadar, “Luke it is your destiny”
-not individually predestined, predetermined to ensure Christ trusting Isr is eternally w/God!
*destiny is not blueprints of history, followed out automatically as the yrs & centuries pass by.
Ephesians: An Introduction and Commentary b. Praise for God’s Purpose and Blessings in Christ (1:3–14)

destiny is not, as it were, blueprints of history, which are followed out automatically as the years and centuries pass by. It is the purpose of the personal God who is active in the world, working out his own will in wisdom and grace

*It is the purpose of the personal God who is active in the world, working out his own will in wisdom & grace
~Macro level ex. is that God determined his plan b4 the foundations of the world 2 rescue sinful humanity through his son Jesus
~Notice that vs 11 says “who works all things…”
^God didn’t set the world in2 motion and then let it spin, he is personally involved working it all out: God is a “hands on” God!
~Micro Level ex. (invite Rebekah up) James, our son!
AMP: ...so that we who were the first to hope in Christ would exist to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:12 ESV
12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ [who first put our confidence in Him as our Lord and Savior] would exist to the praise of His glory.
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ [who first put our confidence in Him as our Lord and Savior] would exist to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:12 YLT
12 for our being to the praise of His glory, even those who did first hope in the Christ,
AMP: ...so that we who were the first to hope in Christ would exist to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

B. The Holy Spirit Guarantee

a. notice the shift from “we” - “you also”

1. means we also, through Jesus, r included for inheritance; how?

Eph 1:13
i. heard the truth, the good news of salvation through Jesus’ work on the cross AND trust in him…result?

b. in response to our faith God gives the H.S.

1. The Holy Spirit: God’s seal that we inherit eternity

Ephesians 1:14 ASV 1901
14 which is an earnest of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, unto the praise of his glory.

2. God’s seal that we inherit eternity

i. a seal is:
2 Corinthians 5:4–5 ESV
4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

In the ancient world the seal was the personal sign of the owner, or the one who sent an important document. This distinguished the true from the spurious. It guaranteed the contents were intact. The Holy Spirit is the seal of every obedient believer

Romans 8:15–17 ESV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:14–17 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Ro 8:15
Ro 8:14-1

2. life with the H.S. now is the taste o what eternity will be

Romans 8:11 ESV
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Ro 8:
i. “Life” in context is that of eternity!
ii. What’s that look like?
-A taste of right relationship
John 14:16–17 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
-A taste of right character
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
*in light of ...
~if love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control is eternity growing in us, then can u imagine what that will look like when we take full possession of it
~furthermore:
-A taste of right lifestyle
2 Timothy 1:8 ESV
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
2 Timothy 1:6–7 ESV
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Tim 1:
2 Tim 1:
~is this the experience you want for today? - here’s how:

3. Activate the taste of eternity

i. These things r in the life o all God’s people, but they must be activated!
-illust. lights: the lights in this bldg r connected to pwr, but for the light to shine, it must b activated
*how do we activate the lights in the bldg
*Spirit Baptism is the activation process!
ii. Baptism in the H.S. activates the fruit, pwr, sound mind.
-starts w/hearing the good news of forgiveness of sin & trusting God for it
Ephesians 1:13 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Eph 1:
-communion w/God: God the H.S. dwells in us relationally
Eph 1:14
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 ESV
21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

B. The downpayment is the Holy Spirit

what’s this mean?

1. He is our guarantee of the inheritance

i. what’s this guarantee look like?
-We rec H.S. upon conversion
*the beginning o the process o being made new!
-Then when baptized in the H.S. pwr is activated in our life
*This is when we c the Gifts begin 2 manifest!
    *Prophecy, tongues, knowledge!
*awesome!! - find ourselves in his presence
~illust. - God moved in Grace Community Church Service
ii. the thing is…these r only the beginning.
-These gifts r only the down payment o our inheritance.
*take a moment & let this sink in…
~our pentecostal experience is only the down payment, experienced in this life.
~can u imagine what it will be like when we c God face 2 face?
    ~imagine the intimacy w/God when Jesus returns 4 us & we c the fullness o a life lived w/God
^When we put off the perishable body & put on the imperishable we will experience his presence in a new indescribable way!
~imagine what it will b like 2 simply walk w/God & not needing prophecy, tongues, words o knowledge
^Just 2 hear his voice directly
iii. didn’t think u had something to rejoice in b4 u got here?
    -U do now
-Somebody give God some praise 4 what’s to come.
-This, our future hope, makes all our current circumstances pale in comparison
*I’m convinced that this is the reason Paul (our author) was able 2 endure & overcome such painful life experiences 4 sake o Gospel
~Everything we go through pales in comparison 2 the revelation o eternity spent intimately w/God
