Where did you begin?
I’m sure by now you have all been asked the age old question, “What are you going to do next?”
This question comes in many shapes and sizes like, “What do you want to do with your life?”, “Where are you going to go to college?”, “Are you getting any scholarships?”,
“If you’re not going to college are you going to join the military?”,
“Then what are you going to do!?”
Some of you may be able to answer all of these questions very quickly and without any hesitation whereas, the rest of you may not even know what you’re going to do directly after the graduation itself.
No matter who you are you’re going to be asked, “What’s next?”
Those of us who are already in the work force are not exempt from questions like these.
Depending on what stage of life you’re currently in you’ll get bombarded with a myriad of questions about anything and everything!
For example, Bethany and I have been engaged for a little over a month now.
After we did the whole proposal and told our families the questions started flowing in.
I did not realize that we were supposed to know nearly every detail of the wedding and of our lives within the same weekend of being engaged!
Questions like, “Have you guys set a date?”, “Where is it going to be?” “Who’s going to be in the wedding?”, “Have you gotten dress yet?”, “Where’s the honey moon going to be?” Now, I love the fact that everyone is excited but, for someone who literally takes everything one step at a time, I had no clue what I was getting into.
We are all asked questions in our jobs about what we’re planning to do about a certain situation, how long are we planning on staying at our current workplace, when are we going to begin thinking about retirement.
The questions don’t stop at work, I’m sure those of you who have children can attest to that.
The point being, we are all asked questions about what we are going to do or where we are going to go that the most important question often gets left out.
The most important question that we should be asking ourselves and others is, “Where did you, we, or I begin?”
This morning I want us to focus on the beginning.
No matter what stage of life you are in we’ve all had a beginning.
Some of us may have had more than one, we may have been given a second chance or a new beginning.
Either way, when we are considering what’s next, what we’re going to do, or where we’re going to go, we all need to ask where did we begin.
You see, Scripture itself starts in the beginning at .
God himself began our beginning.
Jesus was in the beginning.
If the Son of God began there that’s where we should begin too.
As we look at our Scripture, continuously ask yourself, “Where did you begin?” Let’s look more into beginnings in the Gospel of .
READ & PRAY
Key Words
There are a few words we need to look at as we get started.
Beginning- (arche) The beginning of the universe.
Word- (logos) the word of God.
He’s talking about Jesus.
The Word
In the beginning of the universe
with God (let US make man in our image, after OUR likeness)
was God
All created by Him (back to creation)
He gave life (back to creation)
He gave and was light (back to creation)
What He was going to do
Come into the world unkown
To take His children
become a man
give grace and truth- he came as good news
Summ.
& App.
The Word was in the beginning, with God, and was God.
Therefore, we should begin with the Word.
Two ways to begin with the Word
Jesus-
Jesu
Just like we see in our passage, we begin with Jesus Christ Himself,
the giver of grace and truth.
Bring him glory through all we do.
A relationship with Him.
Begin by filtering everything through Jesus.
Scripture- When talking about where to begin, I go back to two instance in my life where I know for certain that Scripture was my starting place.
They both occured in dorm rooms!
At Huntingdon, homesick, unsure about future, fear of failing (at everything) Study Bible recieved for graduation sitting on my desk.
(same one graduates recieved.)
In Bible College studying music, confirmation of entering pastoral ministry.
Scripture’s Uses
Teaching- educating
Reproof- critique
Correction- Improvement according to a standard
Training- (Paideia) A complete education.
Like rearing and education of a child
Result?
Ready for every good work.
The work of God.
Final Word to Grads (and everyone else)
So graduates I know that these two words of advice will exactly clarify for you all of the questions that need answers and all of the decisions that you have to make.
I know that reading Scripture and praying to Jesus may not give you a revelation on which college to attend or what degree to pursue or whatever else it is you may be facing.
But the thing about it is you are not commanded to know the answers to those question.
It is not mandatory for you to know every detail of your life right now.
However, whatever is a command is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Additionally, to study to show yourself approved.
You cannot obey these commands without beginning with Jesus Christ and Scripture itself.
So I urge you and everyone to ask ourselves where did you begin?
Did you begin with a solid relationship with Jesus Christ and walking daily in the Word?
Start there and there will be a lamp unto your feet and light unto your path.
Now I know some of you may be thinking, “Oh shoot, I haven’t started at either one of these places!”
You may not be into reading the Bible right now and you certainly may not have ever began a relationship with Jesus.
I’m sure right now it sounds like you have a lot of catching up to do.
The good news is, you don’t have to “catch up” with Jesus, you don’t have to do any make up work or overtime hours in.
The work has been done when Jesus died on the cross, taking the punishment for sin in our place, dying, and coming back to life defeating sin and death.
If you want to begin with the Word, Jesus, repent and believe.
Turn away from your sin and turn towards Jesus by confessing that He is Lord and believing that He rose from the dead.
Where did you begin?
Let’s pray.
