Truly God is good to Israel, Even to such as are of a clean heart.

is essentially a call for God to defend David against his enemies.
is essentially a confirmation of how God would defeat any enemy that would threaten His chosen people and His plan to bring the Messiah from them.

And the little hills like lambs.
What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest?

Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob;
Which turned the rock into a standing water,

I called upon the Lord in distress:

What can man do unto me?

At first, the children of Israel “believed his words and sang his praise” (), but “they soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: but lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert” (). Consequently, God had to start dealing with His people in severity:
The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And covered the company of Abiram.
Psa 106:
When they forgot God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt…he lifted up his hand against them to overthrow them in the wilderness (). God scattered them and when they “provoked him to anger with their inventions”God sent a plague ().
They mingled among the heathen, served their idols, sacrificed their sons and daughters unto devils, and shed innocent blood, and went “a-whoring with their own inventions” ()
Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people,
Insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.
And he gave them into the hand of the heathen;
And they that hated them ruled over them.
Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were brought into subjection under their hand.
Psa 106:40
Yet in God’s goodness, He gave them other chances:
Many times did he deliver them;
But they provoked him with their counsel,
And were brought low for their iniquity.
Nevertheless he regarded their affliction,
When he heard their cry:
And he remembered for them his covenant,
And repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
He made them also to be pitied
Of all those that carried them captives.

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
