Introduction to the Gospel Of John
John wrote this divinely inspired gospel for our souls to explode with the sweet reality of God becoming man for our salvation.
John had missed the true identity of Jesus for 3 years as he followed him around on earth for his ministry and he desperately did not want us to miss Jesus Deity.
The most important question that anyone has to answer is, “Who is Jesus Christ?”
Or, as he put it himself, “Who do you say the Son of Man is?”
How you answer that question determines your faith, and your fate.
Almost everyone believes that Jesus lived, that he was a teacher, a famous prophet, even a miracle worker, although they may not accept everything the Bible says about him.
Islam believes he was a good prophet, that he died and went to heaven, and that he will come again (as a prophet of Islam); but it does not believe that he is God and that his death was salvific.
And liberal teachers in the churches today might claim something similar, that he was a good man, a great teacher, a wonderful example, but not God in the flesh.
But the Bible and thereafter the traditions of the church claim much more for him.
CS Lewis Logically argues convincingly with the Lord, Liar, or Lunatic illusratation.
If Jesus was a Liar and could not have been a good man because he claimed to be God and the way to salvation.
That is not a good prophet.
If
“The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love!”
“The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love!”
Henry Scougal, The Life of God in the Soul of Man
If a mans greatest love is playing golf, Xbox, or viewing pornography, his soul will be diminished by small pursuits.
The most valuable treasure in all the universe is Jesus Himself.
In him we have true love, sacrificial living, astonishing Beauty, limitless power, unsearchable wisdom and grace.
As our souls fall in love with Him they are lifted to excellence and inexpressible goodness and joy!
John is trying in his gospel to show us the deity, worth, and value of Jesus Himself in an effort to save us from our small pusuits and offer salvation to mankind.
The Gospel of John was written by the apostle John, the son of Zebedee, a Palestinian Jew and a member of Jesus’ inner apostolic circle during his earthly ministry.
John’s original audience consisted of both Jews and Gentiles living in the larger Greco-Roman world in Ephesus and beyond toward the close of the first century.
Mary the mother of Jesus lived with John after Jesus was crucified.
John was the disciple referred to as the beloved.
John lived most likely longer than any of the other disciples.

ESVNow Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Literary Features
The main genre is gospel, which combines three ingredients—what Jesus did, what Jesus said (discourse and dialogue), and people’s responses to Jesus.
Divinely Inspired
One of the reasons that I say it is divinely inspired is that this is what Jesus promised to do.
He said in
 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Help him remember all that i have said to you.
So the Holy Spirit (God’s Spirit) helped men remember and write the inspired word of God.
The greatest reason I believe the Bible to be inspired is His spirit testifies to my soul or has a ring of truth.
