Col
Colossians 3:20 NASB95
20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Ephesians 6:1–3 NASB95
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

Intro

The biblical concept of a family was first recorded in Genesis when God made Adam and Eve and were commanded to be “fruitful and multiply.”
Gen
Genesis 1:28 NASB95
28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
From this command came children. Children then are commanded to obey their parents in all things. Why? “For this is well pleasing to the Lord” (v.20). This command originated from:
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Disobedience is a mark of SIN
Romans 1:30 NASB95
30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
Consequence of SIN
Romans 1:18–32 NASB95
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Romans 1:

I. The Concept Behind Obedience

What are we to teach our children?

The concept of wright and wrong as taught in scriptures.
The concept of honoring their parents.
Humility vs. Pride

II. The Reason for Obedience

Why do you need to obey your parents?

They are your parents. Parents have the God-given role to take care of your. To guide, teach and provide.
Being obedient is well-pleasing to the Lord.”
Well-pleasing is to have “great pleasure.”
It honors the Lord, not just the parents.
It’s an act of worship - an appropriate act towards and Holy and Righteous God.
2. It’s a matter of life and death
Ephesians 6:3 NASB95
3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:3)
3. So they can do the same.
3. So they can do the same

III. How do you teach obedience?

Children are to be taught under the ADMONITION OF THE LORD while under the responsibility and care of their parents.

2. Develop an atmosphere at home conducive for learning and teaching. How does that look like?
By developing a loving and trusting relationship with his sons and daughters

The former will give birth to love and respect to parents.
If they respect him they will follow his lead and learn from his godly example. If a father is unjust or too severe he will provoke his children to bitterness, which will produce discouragement that could lead to permanent enmity.

Avoid unreasonable and overbearing request and commands
Assurance of love, acceptance and value
Provision for their children - IMMATERIAL and MATERIAL.
3. Age appropriate
When instructing children, their age needs to be taken into account.
4. Biblical Modeling - another manifestation of the concept “in the Lord.”
To teach them things of the Lord, parents themselves have to be in the Lord.
One of the most effective way to teach your kids is to show to them that you walk the talk.
There is a limit to what the children obey from their parents. They are not to follow in the footsteps of their parent’s sinful behavior.
Example of parent’s sinful behavior is an “abusive behavior.” (Read )
One of the most severe warnings ever issued in all of history was issued by the Lord Jesus to adults who abuse children:
Galatians–Colossians (King James Version) I. Believing Children and Parents Are to Walk under God’s Authority, 6:1–4

One of the most severe warnings ever issued in all of history was issued by the Lord Jesus to adults who abuse children:

Mark 9:42–48 NASB95
42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea. 43 “If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 44 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. 45 “If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into hell, 46 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. 47 “If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

God does not tolerate the abuse of children. It’s interesting that even among criminals who are in prison there is a limit to evil and abusing children is one of them.

Lesson Learned

Obedience is to be taught in every generation. It is in inspired by love and a demonstration of humility. Exercise it and things will go well with you especially if it is in the Lord.
