Sermon Tone Analysis

Today is Pentecost Sunday.

Pentecost is 49 days after Easter…7 weeks and today is that day.

I want to read the passage from Acts that will serve as our introduction to our continuing message series in Romans.

Open to and we’ll read verse 1-21

If you don’t have a Bible, I have a few really nice study Bibles here that I would love to give you.

The quotation read by Peter is from the end of Joel chapter 2.

Peter then preached to them the Good News or Gospel message of what Jesus did and what the result was.

If you jump down to verse 41, 3000 were Baptized and added to their number that day…instant mega church!

The result of God’s pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the believers was others giving their life to Jesus.

The day of Pentecost was a day of many coming to Him…by faith.

That is what we’ll read about in today…let’s turn there now.

Last week we ended on on Verse 4..

vs 4: Jesus is who the law was pointing to.

He is the reason the law was given.

God is more concerned about what’s in our heart than He is concerned about how we act.

I was having a conversation with a brother in Christ from another church and we were talking about how as men we tend to look at how to fix “it” and in many cases we try to fix “it” by fixing our actions, but God’s Word tells us that if we fix our attention on Him and turn our hearts to Him, the actions will follow.

Now Paul gives us a bit of a sermon on Righteousness by faith by quoting old testament law out of the book of Deuteronomy

vs 5:

Righteousness by Law requires us to live by the law.

Following the Law promised life and success in the calling of God.

(, , and then in several other OT books quoting these passages)

Unfortunately following the entire Law was not possible

vs 6-8

Again Paul quotes from

Paul is using OT scripture where the Law was essentially saying you don’t have to look far for what is being asked of you.

It is not in Heaven where it is impossible to find…it’s not in the deepest abyss where no one could ever go.

Vs 8 tells us where the ‘answer’ is - It is in our mouth and heart.

Why is this important?

This is basis for what Paul is about to say about the gift that is available to us and how to get it.

This is the basis for the good news that all of the believes have proclaimed and continue to proclaim

vs 9-10

This might be one of the most quoted verses during Sunday morning services here over the last 8 months since we started this series in Romans.

Declare (homologeo) - Profess, confess allegiance, admit, acknowledge

This is an outward expression of the personal Lordship of Jesus over our life

Believe (pisteuo) - think to be true, believe, implies trust

Inwardly come to the point where believe and trust in the resurrection of Jesus.

Pisteuo is has the same root word in Greek that is often translated faith (pistis)

Belief = Justification

Justification - made right, this is the restoration of our relationship with God.

Profession of Faith = Salvation

Salvation - rescue from danger, deliver to divine salvation

Verb tense is present in vs 10, but future in vs9.

Which is it?

Both - it is both a saving in the here and now and a future salvation when Christ returns or we die.

One thing to note...

Even the demons and spirits acknowledge Jesus as Lord:

Jesus was teaching and demon possessed man recognized Jesus as the Holy One of God

man possessed with a bunch of spirits “legion” called Jesus the Son of God.

It is in how we acknowledge Jesus as Lord.

Do we trust Him and give our life and heart to Him for Him to do as he pleases, or is our recognition of Him as an adversary?

vs 11-13

Believes in Him, Calls on Him

Not put to shame and will be saved

Put to shame - from Isaiah that Paul also quoted in .

If you remember from the introduction about Pentecost from Acts, Peter quoted these exact words from Joel.

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

I want to pause right here for the end of part 1 of the message today.

I want to allow some time for us to reflect on what we’ve read.

Have you Believed and Confessed?

Not like the demons, because they also believed and confessed…instead in the context of putting your trust and faith in what Jesus did on this earth and on the cross for you.

Let’s read the last 2 verses of our passage today and then I want to challenge us all who have called on Jesus as Lord and Savior

14-15

Call -> Believe -> Heard -> Preaching -> Sent

Call - People can’t call on the name of Jesus unless they’ve come to a point of Belief.

If they call without belief, the calling on Jesus is merely just words.

Believe - People can’t believe in something they’ve never heard about.

They have no excuse about their actions…God’s Law was written on all our hearts, but if they never hear the name of Jesus and what He did, they can’t believe in him.

People can’t call on the name of Jesus unless they’ve come to a point of Belief.

If they call without belief, the calling on Jesus is merely just words.

Heard - People can’t hear about Jesus unless someone tells them…preaches to them.

Another word for preach in this context is Announce in an official capacity.

Today Renee and I will be getting on a plane…we won’t get on the plane until someone says now boarding.

People can’t get on that eternal flight unless someone announces…now boarding!

Preaching - People don’t preach or announce who Jesus is if they haven’t been sent to do so.

The person at the gate desk at the airport was given instructions on when to announce and how to do it.

Likewise the body of believers at CCC has not excuse.

We’ve read from God’s word that it is all of our responsibility to Preach the Good news.

If we reverse this...

If we reverse this...

People are sent to preach the good news of Jesus that others might Hear so they can believe in their hearts that Jesus rose from the dead and call out or confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord.

Look in Verse 15 what we miss if we don’t preach...

Beautiful feet…This doesn’t mean your feet will be magically beautiful...

It is symbolic of the coming of the one who preaches…it will be a beautiful thing…it will bring Joy and be an honor for the one preaching

Closing

Maybe we’ve never formally sent all of you as announcers, as heralds, as proclaimers, as ambassadors of the Good news of Jesus.

This morning we will formally do that.
