Preview of the future
We have talked a lot during the last months about pictures or types in the book of Joshua.
That there are parallels between Joshua and the book of Revelation.
So this morning we will close out our study of this great book drawing attention to just 7 of these.
Joshua is the Hebrew form of Jesus.
The Hebrew is Yeshua meaning Yahweh is Salvation.
So this first point gives the first clue that there is something extra special about this book.
You might find it interesting that the Revelation comes from the Greek Apocalypse, meaning the unveiling of Jesus Christ.
In a similar way the book of Joshua is the foretelling of the Apocalypse.
Jesus is every where in this book.
Jesus is coming back!
Of this we have no doubt and a full 1/3 of the bible is about prophecy and future events.
So if you consider it, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were given the land but usurpers had come in to take it, for some 400 years and now Joshua has come back to drive them out.
In a larger sense Adam and Eve sold the title deed to the Earth to Satan and he has taken control of this earth as a usurper until our Joshua returns to take it back.
3.
In we had the interesting story of Rahab the Harlot and the 2 spies or, what do we call them?
Witnesses.
We didn’t read about spying we read about them sharing with a woman how she and her household could be saved.
The plan required that a”scarlet” cord or rope be hung in her window.
Scarlet being the color of blood, the flax rope being of the same material as the priests robes.
We talked about where the dye for the color scarlet come from, Tola or Scarlet Worm.
We read in 2:2 that the King of Jericho searches for the spies but Rahab hides them on her roof under some flax.
They escape and hide away for 3 days in the mountains.
In we see the two witnesses prophesying with amazing power.
Sharing the Gospel during the great tribulation.
Vs 11 When they finish their testimony the beast will pursue them and kill them.
Their bodies lie dead in the street s for 3.5 days, in a sense they go away for 3 days.
And then what?
They come back to life just as the 2 spies are unseen for three days and come back.
4. The concept of the 7 years of great tribulation has an interesting parallel in Joshua.
You see the conquest of the promised land also took 7 years.
we know this because in we are told they spent 38 years in the wilderness and in we learn that Caleb was 40 when he went to spy out the land.
In 14:10 we see it has been 45 year and that he is now 85 years old.
So 45 - 38 = 7 years.
5. Another interesting use of the number 7 and it’s parallel to Revelation occurs in .
Count the tribes:
10 And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites:
nations are listed.
Now go back to to see how many tribes are listed.
15 Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth; 16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.
10 nations.
So in Revelation you might remember a passage about the AC giving power to 10 kings but three are removed. .
It is more clear in
7 “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong.
It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet.
It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns.
8 I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots.
And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.
5.
In we saw the story of the long day and the southern conquest of the Promised Land.
In this Chapter we saw a picture of the AC in the form of a king called Adoni Zedek.
He was the King of Jerusalem and his name means, ?.. Lord of Righteousness.
He is not the real Lord of Righteousness but an imposter, just as the AC will be in the tribulation taking the place of the true Messiah in temple at Jerusalem.
Additionally, in the war with Adoni Zedek we see the miraculous meteor shower that kills the army of the enemy exclusively, :
11 And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the LORD cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died.
There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.
There is an interesting parallel in
21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent.
Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.
There is anther OT king that has an similar name but he is the real deal.
That is Melchizedek, his name means King of Righteousness.
He recieved tithes from Abraham and gave him Bread and wine, like communion.
I believe he was the preincarnate Jesus Christ or a fantastic type.
Back to , this Adoni Zedek presents another interesting parallel to Revelation in that he wants to recruit the other Kings to make war against somebody.
?
Gibeonites.
You will remember that they made peace treaty with Joshua but famously used deception to do it.
Pretending to be from a far country with warn shoes and moldy bread.
Joshua learns of the deception not long after but keeps his agreement with them.
The Gibeonites were to remain as a part of Israel as servants to the tabernacle carrying water and cutting wood.
They are later called the Nethinim.
The parallel lies in their likeness to the tribulation saints.
Those many millions who come to faith in christ through the witness of the 144,000 or the 2 witnesses or some other means.
They are different than the bride the church that has been taken out via the rapture.
see
The
13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?”
14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.”
So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple.
And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.
16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters.[fn]
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
The function of the raptured church will be to rule and reign with Him.
See , ,
6.
As we get to the end off Revelation, the tribulation has ended, and Jesus Christ will rule the earth in Righteousness for 1,000 years which we commonly call the millenium.
We as His Bride will be ruling with Him over assigned areas.
this reminds us of :
43 So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.
44 The LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers.
And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel.
All came to pass.
And..
See, I have divided to you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, as far as the Great Sea westward.
5 And the LORD your God will expel them from before you and drive them out of your sight.
So you shall possess their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
Finally,
7. In Joshua says:
14 “Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt.
Serve the LORD! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
At the end of the book of Revelation at the close of the millennium, after living in a world ruled by our Joshua, in righteousness.
