1 John 2:28 ESV

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

True Believers should long for the coming of Jesus.

Unbelievers should fear that day.

You are either a child of God or you’re under his condemnation.

Illustration: Think about when you were a kid and you get in trouble. And you’re momma says. Go to your room until your dad comes home. (Is that too patriarchal?)

When we’ve been good, we’re waiting at the door for dad to get home.

When we’ve been bad, the coming of our dad is a fearful experience.

Let me tell you what a good dad does. When he comes home and talks to mom. He prayerfully walks up the stairs. Opens the door. Walks slowly to the bed and sits down. If you’re like me, I’m under the bed. He pulls gently his child out from under the bed and sit his child next to him. He asks, “what happened?” The dad might say, you know that you messed up. But I love you and you are still my child. But you’re grounded for a month. And I’m taking away your cell phone. Grace and mercy without discipline is not graceful and not merciful and does help you grow.

In this scenario, in spite of wrong doing, the child never ceases to be a child of the father.

You are either a child of God or under his condemnation. There is no in between. God’s not waiting to see if you’ll measure up or pan out. He’s not holding his decision until the final test.

So John invites us to search our souls and see if we are really truly children of God.

1 John 2:29 ESV

29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

Examine yourself.

Do you desire to do what is right? (even when you can’t?). Are you finding that as you grow, your sin is having less and less control over you.

1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

A change has taken place in your life. A time when you passed over from death to live. From being under God’s condemnation to being his child. No one is born a child of God. And I know this might make us uncomfortable. Might seem mean-spirited or judgement.

You’re true believers.

There are deceivers coming.

I want you to be rock solid confident that you’re a Christian.

Don’t be drawn away into sin

His joy would be full.
