Walking in the Spirit
Intro:
We’re going to finish up our Holy Spirit series this week.
There is so much more stuff about the Holy Spirit, we’ll most likely touch on it in the future.
So far we have learned:
The Holy Spirit is a person not a force.
Necessary for Salvation
Helper
Convicter
Can’t do anything for God apart from the Holy Spirit.
Converts people to christianity.
There’s a lot that the Holy Spirit does!
In Galatians, Paul is talking to a church were there are a lot of legalistic people.
Legalism is where people try to put you under the law that Jesus already fulfilled.
Or, where people try to put they’re own convictions on you when it’s not scriptural.
So, there was a lot of that going on..
So Paul wrote Galatians!
In Galatians, Paul is writing it with all CAPS as if he were yelling.
As Paul is yelling he mentions the Fruit of the Spirit!
Which is what we’re going to cover today.
V. 16-18
You wanna know what’s God’s will for your life?
Walking in the Spirit.
If we are going to walk in the Spirit… Then, you won’t give into your fleshly desires.
Legalist think that walking in the Spirit gives license to sin..
But thats not true.
To walk in the Spirit it means:
Three
The Holy Spirit lives in you
Be Open and Sensitive
Pattern your life after the influence of your Holy Spirit
Lives in:
In order to have the Holy Spirit, you have to accept Christ.
When you put your faith and hope in Jesus, then you receive the Holy Spirit.
Open & Sensitive
You have to have your heart soft and ready to receive..
When you’re heart is hard, you can’t hear from the Holy Spirit.
When you have the Holy Spirit, you will sometimes have feelings like: I should pray for this guy, do this, give this, and whatever..
When you get those and not act on them, then your heart is going to start getting hard.
Pattern your life
When you pattern your life after the influence of the Spirit, you’re life would be looking a lot like Jesus.
When the Holy Spirit is influencing your life, you will be walking in the will of God.
There’s no way you can walk in the Spirit and be sinning at the same time.
The Spirit teaches us of Jesus and guides us to be more like Jesus.
Key of Christian living is walking in the Spirit.
Luther on the lust of the flesh: “I do not deny that the lust of the flesh includes carnal lust.
But it takes in more.
It takes in all the corrupt desires with which believers are more or less infected, as pride, hatred, covetousness, impatience.”
Walking is tough
Walking in the Spirit is not an easy task.
Your flesh wants to do stuff the Spirit doesn’t and vice versa.
The Spirit wants what is best for you, but he’s always battling against the flesh.
When Paul uses the term flesh, he didn’t mean our flesh and blood bodies.
Precisely speaking, our flesh isn’t even that fallen nature, the “old man” that we inherited from Adam, because the old man was crucified with Jesus, and is now dead and gone ().
Instead, as Paul uses it here, the flesh is the inner man that exists apart from the “old man” or the “new man,” and which is trained in rebellion by the old nature, the world, and the devil.

When you’re saved the old man is dead and gone, but the influence is still there.
And it’ll battle against the Spirit until you’re dead.
When the flesh begins to cut up the only remedy is to take the sword of the Spirit, the word of salvation, and fight against the flesh.
If you set the Word out of sight, you are helpless against the flesh.
I know this to be a fact.
I have been assailed by many violent passions, but as soon as I took hold of some Scripture passage, my temptations left me.
Without the Word I could not have helped myself against the flesh.”
(Luther)
