Giving To Jesus To Reach Your One
John 6:1–15 NLT
1 After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. 3 Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him. 4 (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.) 5 Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” 6 He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” 8 Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. 9 “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” 10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.) 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted. 12 After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.” 13 So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves. 14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!” 15 When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
Introduction:
Many times we are willing to be committed as long as we only have to give what we do not have.
Story of the man who was willing to give his friend whatever he asked, as long as he did not have it. When he was finally asked if he would give him 1 of this 2 hogs, he responded “Man, you know I have to hogs!”
T. S.: In order to get to the heart of the issue that this passage uncovers, we will answer 3 questions.
Why are you following Christ?
What are you willing to give up to Jesus for his use?
What can Christ do with what you giving?

I- Why are you following Christ? (John 6:1 – 2).

John 6:1–2 NLT
1 After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.

A- Are you following him because it is the respectable thing to do?

1- It is respectable to go to church.
a. some of those following in the crowd were scribes and Pharisees. Their only desire was to look acceptable and religious to men.

B- Are you following him because of the miraculous things he does? (John 6:2).

John 6:2 NLT
2 A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.
1- Many people in Jesus’s day simply desired to see more of the spectacular things he did. (Matthew 16:1) (Acts 8:13 – 19).
Matthew 16:1 NLT
1 One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.
Acts 8:13–19 NLT
13 Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!”

C- Are you following him because he is your Lord and Savior?

1- Have you turn from your sin and surrendered to Christ? (John 6:68).
John 6:68 NLT
68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.

II- What are you willing to give up to Jesus for his use? (John 6:3–9).

John 6:3–9 NLT
But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

A- Are you willing to give him your time? (John 6:3–6).

1- Sitting with Jesus, fellowshipping with him?
2- Jesus already knows how to handle the situation you are facing (John 6:4 – 6).
John 6:4–6 HCSB
4 Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. 5 Therefore, when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward Him, He asked Philip, “Where will we buy bread so these people can eat?” 6 He asked this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do.

B- Are you willing to give Jesus what you have? (John 6:7–9).

John 6:7–9 NLT
7 Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” 8 Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. 9 “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
1- Jesus never requires you to give what you do not have.
2- Jesus only requires you to give what you do have.
Moses had a shepherd’s staff (a stick). (Exodus 4:2).
Exodus 4:2 NLT
2 Then the Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied.

III- What can Christ do with what you give him? (John 6:10–15).

John 6:10–15 NLT
10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said.

A- Do not be discouraged with your lack of ability (John 6:9).

John 6:9 NLT
9 “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
1- Jesus’s work is never limited by our resources.
2- Just offer him what you have and are.
(Philippians 4:13).
Philippians 4:13 NLT
13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

B- Step out in faith and obey his directives. (John 6:10–11).

John 6:10–11 NLT
10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.) 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
1- When Jesus speaks, he is ready to act.
2- He has a plan that is already in motion.
3- All he expects is simple obedience. (John 6:11) (Luke 6:46).
John 6:11 NLT
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
Luke 6:46 NLT
46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?
Example of Jesus sending out the 70 witnesses. (Luke 10:1-17).
Example of Jesus sending the disciples to get the donkey for his ride into Jerusalem. (Mark 11:1-10).
Example of Jesus telling Peter to go fishing to find the money to pay his taxes. (Matthew 17:24-27).

C- Christ will multiply what you give him in order to accomplish his will. (John 6:12–13).

John 6:12–13 NLT
12 After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.” 13 So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
1- He will use what you offer to fulfill the need.
2- He multiplies the resources left over for additional work.
God multiplied the food yielded to Him on two occasions. (Text and Matthew 15)
