Captives

This world wants to take you captive! We need to know and be prepared so not taken captive.
(expand on why, how the world may take you captive; don’t become a prisoner of war)
The false teachers did not concentrate on the lost, but wanted to kidnap, to take hostage, to take captive those who are members of the church.
It is easy to be taken captive if you are ignorant of the truth of God’s Word, you could easily be persuaded by some smooth talking person or good sounding philosophy that is contrary to what the Bible says.
Know what you believe and why you believe it
We need to know the doctrine (teaching) of our faith (on personal level)
We need to know the origin of the teaching
Is the teaching from God or from man?
Is the teaching ground in the world or the Word?
These as well as what we have in, with, and through Christ who paid in full the price for our redemption.

I. Watch out!

You have seen the signs telling you of dangers, that tell you to watch out. Well there are signs in the Bible too that tell us to spiritually and even physically to watch out too.
Colossians 2:8 NASB95
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
Paul speaks in military term about being taken captive, basically becoming a prisoner of war in a literal fashion, isn’t he?
Do we know people who have some form of godliness but deny the whole truth of the whole counsel of God? (2Tim3:5)
2 Timothy 3:5 NASB95
5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
How about people who were once with us but have gone out? (1Jn2:18-19)
1 John 2:18–19 NASB95
18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.
Watch out for man made traditions (Mt15:1-20; Gal1:14)
Paul speaks of empty philosophy. He is not saying that all philosophy is bad, but we need to be careful of what philosophy we listen and adhere to. Is it in alignment with the Bible? The false teachers teaching is empty (hallow in some versions) it is built on the traditions of man, not God.
Even Paul before His conversion was zealous for what appeared to be good tradition (Gal1:14)
Galatians 1:14 NASB95
14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions.
I hope that we can take pride in our bible traditions and if anyone walked in they would see is talking, walking and doing as the Bible says and not a man made tradition.
Beware of the rudiments of this world (Col2:8 from KJV)
Colossians 2:8 KJV 1900
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
The Greek word for rudiments has several meanings.
The elementary sounds or letters, the ABC’s
Basic elements of the universe (2Pt3:10-12)
Basic elements of knowledge of some system (Heb5:12)
2 Peter 3:10–11 KJV 1900
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2 Peter 3:12 KJV 1900
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Let me give you another to consider
Hebrews 5:12 NASB95
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
in ancient Greece the meaning was also linked to the elemental spirits of the universe. To the angels and the like that they believed influenced the heavenly bodies. (this became a strong tenet o the gnostics in the 2nd century. You can see the early form being discussed by Paul here too

Colossians 2:16 NASB95
16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day—
Paul warned them in (v.16) just like warning them in (v.8) - one thing that is certain is that True Christian doctrine is not in line with those things as well as we should know not in align with horoscopes, astral charts, ouija board, fortune telling and the like. The whole zodiac system is contrary to the Word of God. Even in the O.T. they were taught to stay away from these things
Leviticus 19:31 NASB95
31 ‘Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.
Simple question, why follow empty philosophy when we have all the fullness in Christ?

II. In Him

Jesus Christ is the fullness o God, and that fullness dwells in the heart of the beleiver
COl2:9-10
Colossians 2:9–10 NASB95
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;
Colossians 2:11 NASB95
11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;
Paul gave the answer to have the protection against the empty philosophy and the teaching of the false teachers. IT IS IN CHRIST (Col2:9, 1:19) also see Mt1:23 - God with us!
Col
Colossians 1:19 NASB95
19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,
The fullness means the sum total o all that is God is found in Christ Jesus, in Him, His being, His attributes. This became evident when He came and dwelt among man
Matthew 1:23 NASB95
23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
When Christ rose, He rose in a body, this is the body that suffered, died and descended to set the captives free and then appear before the apostles and others.
Mary and the women did not see a spirit, they saw the Lord.
The men on road to Emmaus did not walk with a spirit they walked with the Lord
Thomas did not stick his fingers into a spirit but into the wounds of the Lord
All things we need are found in Him, we are made complete (v.10) (see Eph3:19 too)
when we are born again, we are not born in need of something more, we are born full, and we share in the fullness of Christ for He lives in us by His Spirit. look at this
Ephesians 3:19 NASB95
19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
Paul wanted the church to grasp, to understand the love of Christ, the fullness of God!
In Him we find that He is head over every rule and authority (v.10)
(expand on his headship, etc)
In Him you were circumcised with circumcision not made with hands (v.11)
(expand on circumcision)
The Christian needs to understand who Christ is (God in the Flesh, God with us), His deity (He is the one with rule, reign and authority as the Lord of Lord and the King of kings), His fullness (the complete embodiment of God in the flesh). When we start to grasp that then we can start to grasp what we have in Him!
What we believe matters, and we need to test the teaching against the scripture as the Bereans did.

III. With Him

The false teachers bringing the threats against the church in Colossi, and even today we see it are made up of several things, empty philosophies, oriental mysticism, astrology and Jewish legalism (today other forms of legalism).
Acts 17:11 NASB95
11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
The false teacher wanted to force the converts, the church to submit to Old Testament customs (circumcision) and adhearance to the Law. Paul now delves into what we have with Christ. For with Christ is all the sufficiency needed. And i we are with Him then we have all we need too.
Some questions we can ask of any teaching
Col2:
Where does it put Jesus and His work, teaching?
Colossians 2:12–13 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Colossians 2:14 NASB95
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Does it rob or lower Jesus of His rule, reign, authority?
Jesus Christ came, lived, died and was resurrected so we could be with Him. He came to give us victory over sin. What the Law could not do, He did. We are no longer captives but with Him we have great things.
We were buried in baptism with Him
Does it deny His deity or His humanity?
Expand
Does it try to add to the work of the cross, or is the cross sufficient?
We were raised up with Him
Expand
We were made alive with Him

The parallel passage you can find in Eph2:1-11; but you can look and study that out yourself
Ephesians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands—
When Christ died, we died with Him, died to sin. When he was buried, we were buried with Him, our sins buried in waters of baptism, When He rose, we rose with Him to a new life, born again, not regenerated, but new
Eph2:
Romans 6:4 NASB95
4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
This all takes place when we have obedient faith then we can know
Colossians 2:12 NASB95
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Because Christ was raised it was possible for us to be raised. God has forgiven our trespasses
(insert nailed to the cross slide here)
nailed to the cross (v.14)
what was nailed to the cross?
Our debt; Cancelled out the debt v.14) a debt we could not pay (insert though on song; He paid a debt He did not owe)
Cancelled out the debt v.14) a debt we could not pay (insert though on song; He paid a debt He did not owe)
We were guilty; we deserved the wages, the penalty but Christ took it on or us.
The law of sin and death
Sacrificial system was nailed to the cross; for Jesus was God’s perfect and acceptable sacrifice
Any other way except through Jesus was nailed to the cross for He is the Way!
How did this all happen? How did it become available to be in Him and be with Him? It came through Him is how

IV. Through Him

It was through Him, the work He did at the cross that we can have our victory!
Colossians 2:15 NASB95
15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
When He rose, he overcame death and disarmed the rulers and authorities
He stripped Satan of his rule as ruler of this world; he took away any weapons he had. Satan cannot harm the believer who is in Christ and walks with Christ. For Satan only has power we give him, so walk with Christ and Satan has no power
When He rose, He made a public spectacle of Satan.
Where Satan at the cross thought he had victory, the reality is 3 days later just as prophesied Jesus rose and defeated death, and vindicated God and vanquished Satan.
When He rose, He displayed the triumph through Him

May we remember what we have in Him
Colossians 2:9 NASB95
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
Colossians 1:7 NASB95
7 just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow bond-servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on our behalf,
Colossians 2:7 NASB95
7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
so that we will not be taken captive
Colossians 2:8 NASB95
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
All because of the cross where our debt is nailed
Colossians 2:14 NASB95
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
