Intro
Thank you to moms, today we take a small break from our journey through the gospels to thank both God and moms for the gift of moms.
I know how hard moms work, also there may be some here, the word mom may not reflect what we would desire it to be, or maybe the word mom brings you pain because you were robbed of that blessing as a woman,
Prayer
Scripture Reading
What is a mom?
Is it the one who tucked you in at night?
Is it the one who made your lunch and saw you get on the school bus, is it the one who taught you how to pray?
What is her value, the value indeed is priceless but like most things that are beyond comprehending their value, they rarely are apprecieted in a persons life is when they are absent.
Whether that absence is because of death, or family strife, I want to describe what a mom truelly is.
In the Bible, the mystery of the church is often spoken of, in the Old Testament we read about the apple of God’s eye, Israel and her people definetly are but we also know that God reveals in the New Testament this mystery on how He would save His people and unite them as One in His church.
I believe the foreshadowing of the church is seen in the Old Testament, it is seen in marriage.
The husband is representative of Christ while the bride is the church.
Now in a biblical marriage of one man and woman entering into a covenant relationship with God the woman is blessed to give birth to their children.
No man will know this honor for it is given to eve and all her daughters to receive this blessing.
Why is it a blessing, to give life, to look upon the new born face of a child that has lived inside you, depended on you for every moment of its life, depending on you for everything.
Now the mystery of the church is found in the gopsel of Jesus Christ, the first light of the gospel a child will experience is in its mother.
The way a mother tenderly cares for their child is a reflection in how God loves, the way she is willing to sacrifice, her life, career, personal ambitions for the sake of training up her child is a reflection of Christ being willing to sacrifice His own life, to set aside His throne and come to earth to take upon Himself the wrath of the Father for our sins is first seen by a child in their mother.
When a child is hurt, she is their, when a child makes a bad decision, she is their to offer gentle and loving correction, when we fall, theremom is to pick us back up.
I’d remind you that Jesus Himself needed a mom.
The gospel largely will be embraced by a child because of the early years with mom, if she has devoted herself to make Christ the center of her life then the child will likely follow suite.
Now if Jesus is important but not at the top we shouldnt expect a child to put Him above all else, a child left to their own will make themselves to be most important.
The love and sacrifice of their mother draws them out of the selfish worldly sinful nature into an encounter with Christ.
So to all the moms here who have faithfully raised their children, I say thank you.
To every mom who has loved Christ with all their heart, with all their soul and all their might I say thank you.
Now I know everyone has not been the perfect mom or even had the perfect mom, let me simply say being a mother is not bound by biological birth.
Mom to me is the single hardest name for me to say, its a name that means so much to so many but for me its a cavity of emptiness and longing for what should be.
There have only been two women who I have ever called mom.
One is out of courtesy, the other is because thats what you are.
Paul in sends greetings to Rufus and his mother who Paul tells us has been like a mother to him.
I would like to publicly before God, all the saints and sinners here and all who will listen to this recording thank you to these women who have been mom to me at one point or another.
Crystal Blythe, Jo Ann Riley, Karen Kralik, Georgia, Vicki, Diana Muniz, and to the spiritual mothers Blanche Norris, Jan Carr and most recently Juanita Pitts.
At various times in my life for reasons mostly I dont understand mom was an ever changing reality.
Whether the world or sin, or just the craziness of life I have the honor of having many that God has created to show me the light of the gospel, while I like anyone else longed for the traditional mom, where we were torn apart God raised up another, none replacing but God providing for what I needed at that point in life.
Now maybe you are like me, you were torn from your family, lived in foster care, abandoned or maybe you had the Mayberry family upbringing where it was always perfect but either way understand God loves you and you are part of showing and receiving that love.
Maybe these words sadden you because you never got to give birth, again I tell you, you have been a mother to more than you know, maybe there some here who are being called to reunite and let the past go, I would encourage you to do so.
Rise up now and seek to be that spiritual guidance, I can assure you the light of the gospel will shine the brightest when it is you who has written it on your childrends hearts.
Now to the children of mothers who have trained you up, proverbs is a book with God’s wisdom given to you.
It is no coincedence that the first Proverb speaks these words.
Next month we will speak about a father’s instruction but for today I want to say to the mom’s know your hard work will not be forgotten by me or by God.
Keep up the good fight!
My Really Old Bible
As we close and I get ready to make steaks to two very deserving mothers I want to offer a few things to all here.
If you are a mother or a woman who is in place to be motherly but havent loved God with all your heart, soul and strength and your children have not been taught to seek after the Lord, they still can see the light of the gospel in you, if you would seek the light yourself on bended knee in this altar.
Now to the children that maybe you havent listened to her instruction, you have taken the treasure of your mothers love and traded it out for wordly passions, it is not to late, come down and receive Christ, then you will have the rest of eternity to work on that relationship, this is my hope with all those names I spoke of.
Now maybe you grew up, no mom, or no one deserving that title, or mom didnt share that light of the gospel, maybe she was dark, maybe she showed nothing but darkness, I can assure you God created you and her to be in His love, somewhere she missed that, it doesn’t mean you have to.
You can be the one to shine the light of the gospel but you must receive that light into yourself.
Gospel and moms
Moms are the first example we get of the love of God, the first light of the gospel.
