Introduction

Greetings...
As you all know the theme of our study has been “Open Eyes.”
Psalm 119:18 ESV
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
So far in this study we have examined...
So far in this study we have examined...
God’s love for us in His creation.
God’s love for us in His determination to bring about the fulness of time in the “Scheme of Redemption.”
Today we are going to now look at the sacrifice that brought about redemption and the sacrifice we must be willing to make for our Redeemer.

Redemption Required A Sacrifice

Remember the “forgiveness of sins” couldn’t happen without bloodshed.

Last week we mentioned this and proved this point from the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

What did “bloodshed” encompass or really mean?

It meant Jesus was humiliated by His creation.
First by His chosen people, the Israelites.
Psalm 22:6–8 ESV
6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Matthew 26:67–68 ESV
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
Matthew 26:68 ESV
68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
Mt 26:
Matthew 26:56 ESV
56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Mt 26:
Second by the Romans.
Ps 22:6-
Matthew 27:27–31 ESV
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
We know how this made Jesus feel as well.
Mt 27:
Psalm 22:6–8 ESV
6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
It meant Jesus was abused by His creation.
He was flogged or scourged before the cross.
Matthew 27:26 ESV
26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
Mt 27:
John 19:1 ESV
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.
Jn
He was crucified.
Luke 23:33 ESV
33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.
Matthew 27:35 ESV
35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
Mt 27:3
Mark 15:24 ESV
24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
John 19:18 ESV
18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.
It meant Jesus was separated from God for a moment in time.
Jesus took on the sins of all men for all time.
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Jesus was separated from God because of this.
Mark 15:34 ESV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Mark 15:34 ESV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Mk 15:34
Psalm 22:1 ESV
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

Summery

Jesus came to this earth with a single goal, be the perfect sacrifice for sins in order to redeem His creation.
He was humiliated, tortured, and forsaken to shed His blood for us all.

Redemption requires a sacrifice.

Redemption Requires A Sacrifice

Jesus sacrificed His life so we could sacrifice ours.

As soon as we reach the age of accountability and sin we have been bought and paid for by Satan.
We are separated from God by sin.
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
We are made spiritually dead by sin.
Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Just because Satan owns our soul after sin doesn’t mean we can’t be bought back by Christ, but there is a cost and that cost is our own sacrifice.
We must be willing to sacrifice our old lives of sin.
Romans 6:6 ESV
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Romans 12:1 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
This means giving up everything for God if necessary.
Luke 14:26 ESV
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:33 ESV
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Philippians 1:1 NKJV
1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
Lk 14:
Philippians 1:1 LEB
1 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons.
We must be willing to sacrifice our worldly and selfish desires every day for the will of God.
Luke 9:23 ESV
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Lk 9:23
Philippians 1:1 NKJV
1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
The word servant here literally means slave and means, “a person who is legally owned by someone else and whose entire livelihood and purpose was determined by their master.” (Logos Sense)
Philippians 1:1 LEB
1 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons.

Summery

Sin is Satan’s ultimate weapon against all of us.
Jesus’ sacrifice made that weapon void of power if, we are willing to sacrifice our “old man of sin” and our “worldly lusts” for Christ daily.

Conclusion

Remember the words of the psalmist in .
Psalm 103:1–4 ESV
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
Psalm 103:1–5 ESV
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
