Mother’s Day

God loves mothers
Usual stories of Hannah, Sarah, Rachel, Mary. God blessed their faithfulness and answered their prayers.
We see God’s love for mothers in those stories, but.
Different ladies than we usually think of, but great examples. Examples not of great women so much as God’s great love for mothers.

God Loves the Faithful and Wise Mother

God loves the faithful and wise mother

Jochebed - Exodus 2:1-10

Read
Moses’ parents named = Amram and Jochebed
Hebrews 11:23 NIV
By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.
Jochebed
Mother of Moses. Wisdom to preserve her son, faithful to give him to the Lord. God gave Moses back to his mother for a time to nurse and wean him. Used Moses to redeem Israel
God loves the faithful and wise mother.

God Loves the Dedicated and Generous Mother

Widow of Zarephath -

Elijah had pronounced a drought over Israel. God provided for Elijah along a stream until it dried up (plus ravens bringing bread and meat) About a year.
Then God sent him to Zarephath to be provided for by a widow. Not in Israel. North of Israel along the coast.
Read
Luke 4:25–26 NIV
I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
Many widows in Israel, but only someone outside Israel obeyed and provided for the prophet
recount
1 Kings 17:24 NIV
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”
Not of Israel, widow, poor, on her last food, but she recognized Elijah’s God and hosted Elijah. God honored her hospitality and provided, raised her son to life – another act of provision.
God loves the dedicated and generous mother.

God Loves the Mother In Distress

The Widow of Zarephath was obviously a mother in distress. Here is another example of a mother not only in distress, but a cast aside mother.
was obviously a mother in distress. Here is another example of a mother not only in distress, but a cast aside mother.

Hagar – & 21

Read
Hagar was a slave. From Egypt. (possibly from when they had traveled there)
v.4 when she knew she was pregnant she began to despise Sarah.
v.5 Sarah blamed Abram
v.6 She's your slave, do what you want. Sarai mistreated Hagar so she fled.
v.7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar in the desert by a spring. Where are you going? Running away.
Read
Genesis 16:11 NIV
The angel of the Lord also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.
Genesis 16:Ishmael = God Hears
Ishmael = God Hears
Genesis 16:13 NIV
She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

So Hagar goes back, gives birth.
- About 10-12 years later Sarah is finally pregnant and gives birth to Isaac.
Again, there is contention and Sarah demands that Abraham send away Hagar. He agrees.
Read
God tells Abraham to send away Hagar and Ishmael, again promises to make him a great nation.
then they wandered in the wilderness until the food ran out.
v.15-16 she set Ishmael in the shade of a bush and sat down about 100 yards away, began to cry.
Read
Again, God heard. He saw. He provided. Ishmael grew and became a great nation.
This was Abraham's mess up, not God's. God still blessed the offspring of Abraham, even through this castoff servant woman.
God loves the mother in distress. God hears. God sees.

God Loves the Childless, Mourning, and Grieving Mothers

Mother’s Day is not a time of celebration for everyone. For some, it is a reminder of empty arms, of a child that was lost, or a mother who has passed away.
God sees. He knows.

God loves the childless mother.

Isaiah 54:1 CSB
“Rejoice, childless one, who did not give birth; burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.
as a picture although this passage is specifically about Israel/Zion/Jerusalem.
picture of childless woman is used to describe the joy of the expansion of Israel, but also shows God's picture of love for the woman who can be a mother to others.
God loves the mourning and grieving mother.
Matthew 5:4 NIV
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed who mourn.
Blessed who mourn.
Psalm 34:18 NIV
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 NIV
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
