Deliverance Or Departure
/Text: Matthew 8:28-34/

Place Preached - (Mississauga International Baptist Church)
Date Preached - (08~/05~/01)

Introduction:

After crossing the Sea in the storm, Christ came to the Gergasenes or the Gaderenes (Mark & Luke) on the SE side of Galilee.
This area was heavily populated with Gentiles but their were many Jews also.
There Jesus was met by two demoniacs.
(Explain apparent contradiction as Mark and Luke only identify one man).
Christ’s power is demonstrated here in an amazing way.
The deliverance of demon-possessed individuals are among the greatest of His miracles.
Here is a story of men going in opposite directions spiritually.
On one hand are the demoniacs who were wonderfully delivered and lives transformed.
On the other hand are the swineherders and the townspeople who demanded Christ’s departure from their region.
Some have criticized Christ for the destruction of the swine.
- Don’t forget, pigs were unclean and not to be eaten or kept by the Jews.
- Christ permitted, He did not command the demons to enter the swine.
APPLICATION:  Christ comes to our lives he offers us the invitation of deliverance from our sin and self, from the very power of Satan.
But He will not force himself upon us, those who harden their hearts toward Him and demand His departure will sadly and finally be obliged.
We will follow several threads through this powerful account….
! I. Demonic Activity

!! A. It’s Characteristics

1.
Possession

Demons can oppress, deceive or hinder a person.
Possession is the strongest form of demonic attack.
When Christ asked the demon his name, He responded “Legion, for we are many”.
The Roman legion was comprised of 6,000 men, 3,000 on foot, and 3,000 on horse.
2.
Deals in Death (The Tombs)

These two lived among the trophies of Satan’s plundering ways.
There is an unwholesome and unwarranted fascination with death in our day.
(EG.
Gothic, Black clothing – makeup, Death Metal, occult, suicide).
Picture of the unsaved.
*Ephesians 2:1*

3.
Fierce

They were harsh, savage and considered highly dangerous.
Here was a man naked and wild.
Mark says he could not be chained.
Though men had attempted to confine this maniac on many occasions, they had always failed.
He would break chains and tear off any device used to fetter him.
Yet at Christ’s command they were bound.
One day their leader will be bound in the bottomless pit for a 1000 years!!

4.
Frightening

Matthew says, “/so that no man might pass by that way/”

!! B. It’s Limitations

1.
Worships~/Believes in God

“/Jesus, thou Son of the most high God/”

*Mark 3:11-12*  And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
12  And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.
*James 2:19*  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
It is not knowledge, but love that separates a saint from a demon!!

2.
Subject to Christ’s Authority

“/suffer us to go away into the herd of swine./”
WHY?
I believe primarily to discredit Christ – They accomplished that objective.
It was a great herd of swine – about 2,000 (MARK)

He swine would rather die than have demons possess them.
Christ said “GO” – He suffered them, but they could not go beyond His permission.
*Job 1:12*  And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand.
So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

3.
Destiny

An appointed time of destruction.
“/Art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”/

*2 Peter 2:4*  For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

*Jude 1:6*  And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Satan himself will one day be bound for a thousand years before his final judgment (*Rev.
20*).
Doom of Satan and all his agents…..

*Revelation 20:10 * And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
! II.
Deliverance of the Demoniac

!! A. The Need

In bondage to Satan.
“/He was driven of the devil into the wilderness/”

*1 Peter 5:8*  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

*2 Timothy 2:26*  And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
Unable to help himself.
EXAMPLE: He ran to worship Jesus – The next moment the demons derided Christ  “/What have we to do with thee/?”

!! B. The Change

*Mark 5:15*  And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
*Luke 8:35*  Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
He further prayed that he might be able to follow Jesus.
/Jesus answered him…./
*Mark 5:19*  Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
! III.
Divine Power

!! A. Recognized vs.29

“/What have we to do with thee/”

Familiar chorus – “Mind your own business, don’t interfere with my life!”
It is true they had nothing to do with Him, but He had something to do with them!!!

!! B. Deferred To vs.31

!! C. Employed vs.32

One simple word spoken by Christ “GO”  It was a COMMAND it was a PERMISSION.
The destruction of the swine is a picture of what awaits the unrepentant.
The pigs were stampeded into a lake of water.
The lost are doomed for a lake of fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.
! IV.
Departure of Christ

!! A. In Response to the people’s request.
The whole city came out to meet Him.

“A Whole city at a prayer meeting, praying against their own blessing”.
