Adam’s Book of Generations

Review of the Toledots

Introduction

This is the book of the generations of Adam…
It was written. The account of beginnings was not only orally passed down.
The first mention of book of generations in the OT is about Christ’s lineage. The first book of generation in the NT is Christ’s lineage.
God created man…in His likeness…
Not only did God personally create mankind, but He made him in His image.
He blessed them and named them Man.
Adam is another name for man in representation of mankind.
Gender
He created them male and female when they were created…
God as creator made mankind as male and female.
Any other ‘gender’ is man made and contrary to design.

Generations of the Chosen Seed (Adam to Noah)

Moses compiled the book of Adam with the 10 generations mentioned (verses of three)
How long the father was when he had his son
A brief mention of the father
The total number of years he lived
Adam
130 years after creation...Adam had a son after his own likeness, according to his image…
Adam had a son that took on the likeness of sinful man as a result of the fall.
eight times we find the phrase ‘he died’. Death now reigned because of sin.
Romans 5:21 NASB95
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans
and named him Seth.
“Seth” means appointed or granted.
Seth
he became the father of Enosh.
Seth named his son Enosh, demonstrating he was a man of faith. He understood that man is weak, frail apart from God.
Enosh means “man” and comes from a Hebrew word that means “frail, weak.” It’s the word for man that emphasizes how fragile and weak we really are in ourselves. - Wiersbe
Enosh
records that with the arrival of Enosh, men began to call by or upon the Lord.
Either they were called God’s children
Or they were those who called on God
Kenan
Kenan named his son Mahalalel
Mahalalel (praise of God)
Mahalalel
Mahalalel named his son Jared (shall descend)
Jared
Jared fathered Enoch (teaching, dedicate)
Enoch
Enoch fathered Methuselah (he shall bring death/ when he dies, judgment)
Then Enoch walked with God.
Evidently Enoch, after having Methuselah, realized his need for God.
Only one other place:
Malachi 2:6 NASB95
“True instruction was in his mouth and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many back from iniquity.
...it denotes no the piety of the godly Israelites generally, but the conduct of the priests, who stood in a closer relation to Jehovah under the Old Testament than the rest of the faithful, being permitted to ender the Holy Place. Keil & Delitszch
Like Enoch, a walk with God is available to us!
Colossians 2:6 NASB95
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
Note: it does not say “as Him”.
Galatians 5:25 NASB95
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:7 NASB95
for we walk by faith, not by sight—
Enoch walked with God
Enoch was a man of faith. ()
This phrase is used for two people (Enoch and Noah).
and he was not, for God took him.
Enoch was the 7th generation (as was Lamech from Cain)
Enoch prophesied. Judge 1:14-16
Enoch did not die. Good took him
Only two people never died, Enoch and Elijah ().
Are these two men the two witnesses in the tribulation? ()
Tribulation is Jacobs trouble (Elijah) and judgment of the Gentile nations (Enoch).
Methuselah
Evidently Enoch, after having Methuselah, realized his need for God.
Only one other place:
Malachi 2:6 NASB95
“True instruction was in his mouth and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many back from iniquity.
it denotes no the piety of the godly Israelites generally, but the conduct of the priests, who stood in a closer relation to Jehovah under the Old Testament than the rest of the faithful, being permitted to ender the Holy Place. Keil & Delitszch

Colossians 2:6 NASB95

Galatians 5:25 NASB95
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:7 NASB95
for we walk by faith, not by sight—
Methuselah
f. Methuselah
Methuselah fathered Lamech (conquerer)
g. Lamech
Lamech named his son Noah (rest)
h. Noah
Difficulties in
Gaps within the generations.
Gaps can’t possibly be inserted
Seth: Eve states he is a replacement for Abel ()
Enosh: must be a son of Seth since Seth named him.
Enoch: Judge 1:14 states Enoch was seventh from Adam.
Methuselah: Enoch, a pre-flood prophet, gave his son a name meaning “when he dies, judgment” and the Masoretic chronology without any gaps would place his death in the year of the flood.
Noah: Lamech named him, so Lamech must be his father, not just an ancestor.
Names of Cain’s descendants are the same as some of Seth’s.
In Summary:
Moses summarizes Adam’s book of generations of the first 10 men who were in the Royal lineage
Though the names are individually reflective of the faith of the fathers. Together they mark an interesting phrase:
“man” is “appointed” “mortal” “sorrow”. “The blessed God” “shall come down” “teaching” “his death shall bring” “the despairing” “rest” - Chuck Missler
“man” “appointed” “mortal” “sorrow” the blessed God, shall come down, teaching, his death shall bring, the despairing, rest
