Mother’s are special

Luke 7:11–17 HCSB
Soon afterward He was on His way to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with Him. Just as He neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was also with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Don’t cry.” Then He came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, “Young man, I tell you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited His people.” This report about Him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity.
Good morning
Today I am going to preach what is is simply called a topical sermon . A topical sermon is one that is focused simply on a topic rather than a biblical verse. I usually ty to preach a expository sermon that is one which is focused on scripture and try to expound and explain that scripture, but not today because i wan to talk about a subject.
I remember Momma.
My mother has been dead some 27 years but i remember mama.
I remember mama.
Many of you are blessed for you still have a mother to look on , to touch or to sit and talk to . Take advantage of that if you can because i remember mama and I wish I could do those things.
Mothers have always been special and scripture bears out that fact.

Scripture recognizes Mothers

Proverbs tell us
Don’t forsake mother’s teaching.
the thing
I remember Mama telling me all those things the good things and the ones I thought mad no sense.
But Mom everybody was doing it?
If everybody jumps of the george washington bridge are you gong to jump too.
I didn’t really think at the time that made sense. but Mom was telling me to think for myself and don’t follow the crowd. Yu see the crowd can get you into trouble. Peer pressure has caused many persons to do some silly, dangerous or even criminal things. The crowd is not your friend. Because mama knew that when something happen, only your momma would be there to have your back. the crowd will not be there with you.
I remember momma
Even when the world was a male dominated society scripture said, Honor thy mother. to curse your mother was punishable by death. In fact honor thy mother and father is the 5th commandment.before thy shall not murder is honor thy mother
Before God spoke and said do not commit adultery he said honor thy mother
before he said do not lie, steal, do not covet, he said honor thy mother.
And so I remember mama
It is a different day , because if we were under Mosaic law . there would be a lot of children being taken out today.
My mother was raised on the old school. Cursing my mother was out of the question but i must admit that i was guilty of the occasional talking back, or cutting my eye or the infamous sucking my teeth. But my mom was from that era , as bill cosby used to say i brought in to this world ,soi can take you out. And I believe my mother had the quickest slap in the world . because it was nothing for her to reach out with a kapow when you crossed that line. Sucking your teeth was a no- no because the hand would fly and you were slapped before you know it. I often wondered if my mom had super powers because she seemed to reach me no matter how far i was , and the slap would seemingly come out of nowhere.
Now days , i have seen children ,not only talk back but actually threaten their parents. Maybe we need to institute some biblical law again for some things have gotten out of hand.
But i remember Mama
Take time for your mother, there is no greater duty or privilege to taking time to show affection to your momma.
The first time I ran for judge, I was campaigning while my mother was dying of cancer and although I talked to her I didn’t see her as much as I could to this day it is time lost. Nn 1 kings chapter19, When Elijah made Elisha his apprentice. Before he accepted his service to Elijah, he ran to Kiss his mother and father before accepting his commission. Show your mother you love her while she is here for you will miss that opportunity when she is gone.
I know that we have changing roles today.
Most mother even in two parent households have to work.
Many are raised in single parent homes which require even more sacrifice.
many Moms have to be daddy and momma.
but hold on I believe God will make away.
Mothers have been sacrificing along time and I believe that God will not abandon you
There was a widow who was at her last she told the man of God that she was going to cook her and her son a last meal and die. but God let that last meal continue to be made, for the flour and oil never ran out until the famine was over. I know some of you mother’s are going through , but hold on and trust God. in the darkest time God has and will provide.
Be like Hannah who prayed not only for a child but prayed for the child.
what we need today are some praying mothers . who will pray there way through some trouble.

Jesus recognizes Mothers

I take you to the widow of Nain , she thought her son dead , and her life over.
She was a widow and her only son was dead. therefore she was lost. her chances were slim and none. There was no where to turn to and nowhere to go.
For the government could not help her.
The law which forbade her to own land or own anything for herself was against her.
it seems there was not any kinsman redeemer to step in and take care of her like Boaz and ruth.
Scripture does not mention any rich relatives
but what Scripture says is that during the funeral procession she met jesus.
and because he had compassion for her.he touched the coffin and awakened the young man from death.
changed things
Jesus is still changing things
That same jesus has compassion for mother’s today.
while on the cross he had compassion for his own mother for he told her mother behold your son.
