From Triumph to Temptation, to Triumph
On the heels of the glory of heaven being revealed in the baptism immediately comes the temptation of Jesus leading to the ministry of Jesus. (Mk1:9-11, 14-15)
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
11 and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
and then comes the ministry
14 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Mark is abbreviated in his version compared to Mt(4:1-11) and Luke (4:1-13).
Mark gives some details that the others do not, as they give many details Mark does not, so we will look at some of each today as we look at the temptation and triumph of Jesus here in our passage.
Even though it is abbreviated we can learn much because of the temptations Jesus faced.
Blessings we can know from His temptations:
Able to come to the aid of the people (Heb2:18)
18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Heb2:18
Able to be sympathetic and give mercy and grace (Heb4:14-16)
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
It reminds us that Jesus can understand our temptations
It reveals to us that we too can have victory in overcoming temptation.
Having these things in mind now we can look at the passage with two points to look at today.

As we look at the temptation we will look at the setting, the climax and the end of it.
12 Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
The setting we can see that the Spirit initiated this (v.12)
Just as the Spirit came upon Him like a dove (v.10)
10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
We don’t know exactly what wilderness, it does not say, but we may assume since he is in Judea that it is there.
We can know that he was there for 40 days (v.13)
From Mt4:1-2 we can know he fasted like Moses
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
Here is the Moses passage
28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
We can know He was tempted by Satan (v.12)
Satan: Adversary
Matthew and Luke use “devil:” accuser, slanderer
Interesting fact, only Mark makes mention of wild beasts (v.13) - beasts common in the wilderness of Judea, lions, tigers and bears, oh my. no hold on it is really lions, panthers, hyenas and jackals.
So the setting is wilderness where Jesus is in desolation, deprivation and temptation.
The climax
Mark gives little detail except angels ministered to Him (v.13)
Matthew and Luke give more information; we will look at Mt4:3-10)
3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
We can see the appeal to lust of the flesh (vv.3-4)
5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ”
Mt4:3-4
We can see the appeal to the pride of life (vv.5-7)
7 Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;
We can see the appeal to the lust of the eyes (vv.8-10)
9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ ”
As Jesus responded to each temptation we too can do the same, with the word of God. Jesus said “it is written” (vv.4, 7 and 10).
The end of the temptation
We can know angels ministered to Him (v.13)
exactly how they ministered we do not know, it is not state
In looking at (Lk4:13) we can know that this is not the last time Satan would tempt Jesus
13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
This is not the last time angels ministered to Jesus either (Lk22:43)
43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
So after 40 days of temptation, Jesus is ready to start, begin His ministry work. Sometimes we may have times of trials, tribulations, even temptations that are in preparation for ministry work we are to do.

There are some similarities we have and can learn from the temptation of Jesus and some application we can glean from it too.
Jesus adversary is the same one along with his pinions (1Pt5:8-9)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
The devil, often through his pinions, directs his, their attention towards the disciples of Christ
Don’t take Satan and his pinions lightly, for the battle is real (Eph6:12)
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
We have similar temptations
Lust of the flesh
Immorality and the like, especially when we are young
Lust of the eyes
Materialism and the like, especially when we are middle-age
Boastful pride of life
Pride and arrogance especially when old and looking back at our own thoughts of our accomplishments in life
Overcoming these similar temptations are vital (1Jn2:15-16)
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
We have similar tools to overcome temptations
Jesus appealed to the Word of God, so can we (Eph6:17; Heb4:12)
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
that sword is powerful
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Jesus had faith in the Father and the Fathers plan and will (look at Eph6:16, Heb10:35-39)
So should we it is by grace, through faith in which we are saved. It is by faith that we walk today and gives us assurance in our victory! We should have similar faith
16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
35 Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.
37 For yet in a very little while, He who is coming will come, and will not delay. 38 But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.
39 But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.
SO let us not throw away our confidence (our faith); do not shrink back (turn from God back to the world) pure to persevere by faith which will preserve our soul!
Jesus prayer and taught about prayer to overcome temptation (Mt26:41)
41 “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
So the Word o God, faith and prayer will give us the continued victory over satan his little pinions that have not power unless we give it to them.
We have similar blessings when we overcome temptations
Jesus was ministered to by angels, we too can be ministered to by angels, and angels will carry us home (Heb1:14; Lk16:22)
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Think about that for just a minute, angels ministering to those who will inherit salvation! THAT IS YOU! You as you walk in the Light!
22 “Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
As Jesus received the blessings of heaven, we too will receive the same promise (Rev3:21)
21 ‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
How about a few little take aways today?
We cannot live on bread alone as Jesus showed we need the spiritual food the Word of God too. So eat up!
Don’t let our trust of the Lord be flippant and don;t test the Lord and act foolish. It didn’t work out well for Satan did it?
Scripture can be misused or misapplied and abused as well as used, so be careful (see 2Pt3:14-16)
14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,
2Pt3:14-15
16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
Finally, the way to glory is not quick, it is not easy, but we know it will be worth it (Act14:22)
22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”
(Use below only if time is permitting)
We have an awesome God and a wonderful Savior and because he came from heaven and was tempted with all things he can be our merciful and faithful high priest as noted in Heb2:17, and can aid us in our temptation (Heb2:18) and can be sympathetic, merciful and give abounding grace in our time o need (Heb4:15-16)
So, in our temptations, look to Jesus. (invite you to check out Heb2:17-18 4:15-16, 12:2-3)
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.” Heb12:2-3
