Introduction:

1 As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching.

2 Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely.

They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience.

3 In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine.

⌊They are⌋ to teach what is good,

3 Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God.

They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers.*

Instead, they should teach others what is good.

4 These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children,

5 to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes,* to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands.

Then they will not bring shame on the word of God

4 so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children,

ὡσαύτως= in like manner, likewise... the previous qualities plus some additional ones.

The term indicates that the verb forms, which are lacking in the exhortations to the older women, are to be supplied from the exhortations to the “older men” given previously.[1]

Πρεσβύτιδας = older, aged woman

The term translated “in the way they live” indicates the outward expression of an inner character.[2]

μὴ διαβόλους = false accuser, devil, slanderer.

11 But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when they are drawn away from Christ by desire, they want to marry 12 and will therefore receive condemnation because they have renounced their original pledge.

13 At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from house to house; they are not only idle, but are also gossips and busybodies, saying things they shouldn’t say.”
