Introduction: Tuesday I came home at lunch and was looking forward to eating the leftover chicken nuggets I had made the night before. My mouth was watering all the way home. When I got home and opened the refrigerator, the chicken was gone. One of my kids had taken it to school with them for their lunch. I was severely disappointed. This meant I would now have to cook something for lunch. This is where the problem arose. My son had forgotten to do the dishes the night before and now I had to clean before I could cook. Needless to say I wasn’t a very happy father at this point in my day. Not only had he not done what I asked but he obviously forgot the repercussions of his actions.
As children of God we often times forget about repercussions of our actions when it comes to obeying the rules of our heavenly father. There are consequences to our decisions.
Today as we look at we see a man who is thankful for the deliverance from the trials of his life. Not just his but his people as well. Some believe Hezekiah wrote this particular psalm after the final overthrow of Sennacherib before the gates of Jerusalem. John Phillips says there is more to it than that; it is a prophetic utterance extolling the coming golden age.
However, today, I want to focus on one thing…remembering God’s power.
Proposition: Every person will go through trials in their life.
Interrogative: How do we handle these trials?
Transition: We can handle these trials if we will remember these three declarations of God’s power: The first declaration:

You should remember God’s Power to lead you to your trials

Psalm 66:3 NKJV
3 Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.
Explain:
Psalm 66:7 NKJV
7 He rules by His power forever; His eyes observe the nations; Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah
The writer in praising God for his power of deliverance and that he is supreme above all powers and people on the earth. Any enemy of God is no match for His strength.
Awesome- KJV says terrible, meaning it causes a strong feeling of surprise and astonishment that borders into fear. We could say amazing, incredible, something that stops us in our tracks and makes us think about who we are and what we are doing!
He goes on to say in vs 7 that God is constantly watching the people and his request is that the rebellious exalt themselves.
So What? When you look at your life right now. Would you say it’s going perfectly? There is a trial that everyone is going through. If not today, then maybe tomorrow, or next week and the questions we have to ask ourselves after looking at scripture is this: Why am I going through this?
In light of scripture today, are you being an enemy of God?
Are you rejecting His will for you own? Are you seeking His will?
How’s you personal study going? How’s your prayer life going?
Have you ever noticed that when your listening to a radio station and the further away you get from the station the weaker the signal is? The further away you get from God the weaker you spiritual life gets. That what sin does in your life!
Your sin has a way of clouding your judgement. It’s like a cataract to the soul; you can’t see clearly what God is trying to do in your life
It takes submission to Him, giving Him complete control
God has a way of using trials in your life to cause you to come back to Him and submit to His will. I believe in free will and I believe that God chastises his children for straying from what he has called them to do.
You say I’m not God’s enemy! I love God! Then let’s look at option 2: Are you humble?
Putting yourself first and God second means you have exalted yourself above God and therefore are being rebellious!
God has a way of humbling the proud. Many times through very tough lessons that we call trials.
How do we do that? By saying “I’m glad I’m not like that guy”, “did you hear me preach? Wasn’t that the best sermon ever!” “I’m too good to preach at that little church”.
What other ways does God use to humble us: You have dreams of being the next mega church pastor and God says no, I want you here ate this church preaching to a congregation of 20. What do you do? Do you quit and say no God, I ain’t doing it.
Maybe God leading you to a trial is his way of preparing you for what he knows you are going to need to become the man of God he is calling you to be.
Transition: If he is preparing you for something then the least we can do is remember who it was that brought us here in the first place, and if he has the power lead us to it, then the second declaration is...

You Should Remember God’s Power to lead you through your trials

You Should Remember God’s Power to lead you through your trials

Eventually you will go through a major trial in your life. Whether it’s in the ministry or in your personal life, such as losing a loved one, you will go through a rough time. It is very important to remember that God will lead you through it.
Explain
In earlier verses he reminds us of how God had delivered them from captivity in Egypt by drying up the Red Sea and allowing their ancestors to walk across.
Here he is addressing his people and remind them and thanking God for his everlasting salvation and his power to keep us even in times of distress.
His power keeps us firmly rooted and nothing can stand against that power. The Psalmist says you have tested us O God!
So What?
Brothers just like the writer and the people here, you too will be tested!
You will go through the fire, you will be trampled, beat down, broken hearted at times:
But, just like he says “we went through the fire and through water” you just like them will be made stronger for it!
Illustration: Steel heat treat process
He was grateful to have gone through this process! Why? because the rewards of the blessings that followed were so much greater than the trial that he had went through. He uses the word wealthy in the KJV and rich fulfillment in the NKJV and this literally means overflowing!
What blessing could he be talking about? Let’s look into the future here. The blessing of the nation of Israel was that out of her came the Savior of the world, the one true king, the only acceptable sacrifice and that was Jesus Christ!
What blessing are you missing out on because of all your complaining about the trial your going through. Take a minute and look at the bigger picture. What is God leading you through and how can it be a blessing to you or someone else.
God has the power to lead us to a trial, to lead us through a trial, and the third declaration is...

You Should Remember God’s Power to lead you from your trials

Explain: We see here a reminder of a God who loves his children. A God who hears his children’s cry and reaches down from heaven and pulls us out of the fire. The psalmist certainly gives credit where credit is due. But there are some interesting points that he makes:
First he tells God he will keep his vows that he said while he was in trouble
This is important because many times we tend to say things when we are in need and then when God answers them we go back on our word.
Did God know what we were going to do? Yes. Was he pleased? No.
What should we do? Be faithful to Him.
Second he tells us that he gives his testimony about what God has done for him. How sweet it is to give honor to God.
Thirdly, he tells us that if there is anything no right in our hearts he will not listen.
When we cry out to God we need to have our hearts right first, asking forgiveness for the sin in our lives and then cry out for deliverance from that sin.
Then God will hear the cry of His children and answer accordingly.
Conclusion: Truly vs 20 sums it up: Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me!
