Which should we die for? How do we know? 1. Why do you do what you do? Matthew 15:1–2 NIV 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” a. tradition i. ritual cleanliness = cleanliness - godliness b. good hygiene = wisdom i. FOTR - why do we do this, I will tell you, I don’t know! c. Jesus = Not the issue!!! Matthew 15:11 NIV 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” 2. Why do you do what you do? Matthew 15:3 NIV 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? a. Commandment / tradition i. are we giving weight to the weighty things!? • Commandment - of God • tradition - of men b. Define Commandment i. Define Tradition i. accepted by man 1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV 23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. i. invented by man • change / evolve / adapt why do you do what you do…? … what weight do you give these? 3. What God says Matthew 15:4 NIV 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ a. No loopholes i. what you believe about God and His Word matters b. do you believe?... i. Gods Word is Authoritative ii. Gods Word is Inerrant iii. Gods Word is Infallible c. do you believe?... i. gods word is .... 4. What man says Matthew 15:5–6 NIV 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. a. Convenient b. Cultural i. What are some culturally convenient conundrums we face today? • homosexuality • women in ministry • abortion • politics • impurity • gender • etc... 5. What you have done Matthew 15:6 NIV 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. a. Nullify / VOID = take away the authority of John 1:1 ESV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. i. what have we done!? • what has church become? • are we practicing “religion”? b. God’s Word matters!!!! i. measuring rod • authority • practice • etc... c. Some traditions do not matter! i. church splits / fights... 6. What God will do Matthew 15:7 NIV 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: Matthew 15:8–9 NIV 8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’” a. VAIN = to no end / in worthlessness i. the vanity of traditionalism for traditions sake b. Tradition Alone = Hell Analytical Question of Proposition Some traditions we should kill others we should die for. Which traditions should we kill? Which should we die for? How do we know? • Kill the traditions of men • Die for the commands of God • Know the difference by His Word CONCLUSION FOTR - Tevye Because of our traditions, every one of us knows who he is and what God expects him to do. Without our traditions our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof. Jeremiah 7:23 ESV 23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’ Where are you most tempted to serve/obey mans traditions rather then Gods commands? Repent! / Change! CLOSE = S.H.A.R.P.
