Key verse:
Acts 1:8 NKJV
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

E. Paul’s arrest and voyage to Rome—21:18–28:31
By chapter 28, Paul is on his way to a showdown with Caesar in Rome. However, he was a prisoner for having preached the gospel all over the middle east on his 3 missionary journeys.
`Paul & some prisoners were handed over to a centurion, Julius. On the way to Rome, Julius secures passage for him and his prisoners on a ship. However, Paul is one of the most experienced travellers on-board. Luke has recorded eleven of his voyages, which total 3,500 miles at sea. Paul knows that they have lost time and fair weather. The Jewish Fast (the Day of Atonement) has come and gone, and it is now mid-October. They are late, and their voyage has become very dangerous.
Paul warns the centurion—a fair-minded man called Julius—that some lives will be lost if they continue the voyage. But his advice is ignored by the pilot and the owner of the vessel. They will risk the ship and the lives of its crew in their determination to deliver the cargo.
One day later - hurricane winds start to blow.
276 men aboard
stopped eating
tried to throw things overboard to lighten the load
for 14 days there was no sun or stars; only the blackness of the hurricane
BUT
Acts 27:22–24 NKJV
And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’
acts 27:
…EVERYONE WHO IS WITH YOU WILL BE SAVED
lowered the life raft to escape
WHEN GOD SAVES YOU, YOUR VERY PRESENCE CAN CAUSE THOSE AROUND YOU TO BE SAVED
`(28:1) Deliverance: God’s messenger was shipwrecked, but saved. God had promised to save Paul and He did, and God also saved everyone else on the ship. But there were terrible trials, trials so threatening that only God could have saved His messenger. There was …
(28:1) Deliverance: God’s messenger was shipwrecked, but saved. God had promised to save Paul and He did, and God also saved everyone else on the ship. But there were terrible trials, trials so threatening that only God could have saved His messenger. There was …
• the violent storm which mercilessly drove the ship under its own ferocious power for fourteen days ().
• the utter hopelessness of the situation: everyone except Paul had lost all hope of being saved ().
• the attempted abandonment of the ship by the sailors to save their own lives, dooming all passengers to shipwreck and death ().
• the soldiers’ plan to kill all prisoners, including Paul, to prevent their escape ().
The point is that God promised to deliver Paul and God kept His promise. He always does.

Introduction: God’s protective hand in looking after His servant is clearly seen in this passage. The genuine believer can study this passage and rest assured of God’s protective hand through all the trials of life, no matter how severe they may be.
Chapter 28
Introduction: God’s protective hand in looking after His servant is clearly seen in this passage. The genuine believer can study this passage and rest assured of God’s protective hand through all the trials of life, no matter how severe they may be.
1. Shipwrecked—but saved (v. 1).
2. Marooned and facing island natives—but accepted and helped (v. 2).
3. Snakebitten—but healed (v. 3–5).
4. Facing superstition and heathenism—but given an opportunity for evangelism (v. 6–9).
5. Destitute and stranded—but necessities were provided (v. 10–12).
6. Apprehensive and lonely—but encouraged and strengthened (v. 13–15).
BUT ON TODAY, I WANT US TO UNDERSTAND WHY WE GO THROUGH TRIALS / why is it that we as Christians can pray but still have to face trials?
Why are some people delivered while others are not delivered?
Why are some people healed while others are not healed?
KNOW THIS, THAT WHEN WE PRAY GOD LOOKS AT OUR REQUESTS AND CONSIDERS AT LEAST 4 THINGS:
GOD’S GLORY - will granting the request bring the greatest glory to God’s name?
God’s Love or OUR GOOD - Our good, not only physically, but spiritually. What particular spiritual grace or quality do we need to learn: endurance, self-control, trust, dependence?
a.Spiritually, within ourselves: will granting our request strengthen us more spiritually? Which way will our faith and trust in God grow more?
b.Spiritually, without ourselves: how does God now want to use us—
as a constant prayer warrior?
As an unbelievable testimony to His empowering spiritual strength, no matter the physical condition?
Consider something else: What do the people need with whom God wants to use us?
What is the best way for God to reach them—by demonstrating His strength in and through our trial?
No matter what some may claim, the power of God is often more forcibly seen by manifesting itself through infirmities and weaknesses.
God’s wisdom. He knows what is needed by whom; when it is needed; for whom it is needed; where it is needed; how it is needed; why it is needed.
4. God’s mercy. He wills above all else for men to know His mercy. He does whatever is needed to demonstrate His mercy to men. Sometimes walking through the trials of life reveals His mercy more; sometimes removing the trials reveals His mercy more. He chooses the best way for both the sufferer and those who surround him.

PAUL AT MALTA (28:1–10)

v.2 Raining, cold, wet, kindness of the natives who built a fire

v.3 Paul gathering sticks for the fire & a viper comes out because of the heat and bites Paul.

[park here]
[POINT - to lead is to serve] Paul had preached all over the middle east and was the one responsible for saving all 276 passengers. He should have been treated like a king. But he was humble enough to know that BEING A GOOD LEADER MEANS KNOWING HOW TO BE A GOOD SERVANT. So he is out gathering some sticks for the fire
Viper -
Snakes can be deadly or not deadly but vipers mean venomous snake
venom is made in a sac stored in the head behind the eyes of a snake & then delivered down through hollow teeth into its victim
in other words, vipers have venom in their head and behind their eyes
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A VIPER IN YOUR LIFE?
HAVE YOU EVER HAD SOMEONE WITH HATE IN THEIR MINDS TOWARDS YOU?
YOU NEVER DID NOTHING TO THEM
YOU NEVER SAID AN UNKIND WORD TO THEM
BUT FOR SOME REASON, THEY WALK AROUND MAD IN THEIR MINDS / WITH HATERADE IN THEIR HEARTS TOWARDS YOU
GOD BLESSES THOSE THAT LOVE HIM
1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
2 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV
For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.
BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN SOME FOLK SEE YOU GETTING BLESSED AND THEY HAVE VENOM IN THEIR EYES
THEY DON’T CARE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH
THE STORMS THAT GOD HAS BROUGHT YOU THROUGH
THE ROUGH SEAS HE’S BROUGHT YOU OVER
THE JUST WANT TO SEE YOU BROUGHT DOWN LOW
THINK YOUR SO HIGH AND MIGHTY
THINK YOUR ALL THAT
‘NO I’M NOT ALL THAT BUT MY DADDY IS ALL THAT! AND I WON’T BE ASHAMED TO BE GLAD ABOUT IT!!!
[BACK TO VERSE 3]
2 C
So here’s Paul gathering sticks in the cold, wet rain. He didn’t suspect that along w/ the sticks he had also picked up a snake.
A snake is a reptile - cold blooded and lethargic until its blood heats up
He thought it was a stick but it turned out to be a snake
and so naturally the snake wasn’t very active until Paul moved near the fire
the snake wasn't trying to fool w/ Paul while he was wet, cold and tired. But the minute the snake got near the fire, and Paul was near the fire, that's when it attacked. [CATCH THIS IN THE SPIRIT REALM] The enemy ain't trying to bother you when you're not trying to do anything.
When your cold, wet miserable and feeling sorry for yourself, he's not even looking your way.
But the minute you start to get near the fire, that Holy Ghost fire, then the enemy wants to come at you with its fangs trying to stop the plan that God has for your life.
Paul had a destiny to go to Rome but even after all he had been thru that snake could have ended everything right there
God has a destiny for your life; new business, new ministries, new places to spread the gospel, new people to tell the good news. But the moment you begin to get hot for God the devil begins to go hot after you!
You wondered why your going through so much pain
so much suffering
so many trials
Because the devil is trying to stop your journey
end your purpose
destroy your destiny
But the devil is a lie!
Romans 5:1 NKJV
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Psalm 34:19 NKJV
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
v4 & 6 - No one would even lend a hand to help
they just watched and waited for Paul to die
Can I minister two things to you today?
Paul wen thru this trial alone BUT God
some trials we face will have to be faced all by ourselves (…never leave us nor forsake us)
There are some people in your life that are just sitting around waiting for you to die
But your not going anywhere until God says to go. that’s why God said
Psalm 55:22 NKJV
Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

CONCLUSION

SNAKE PREVENTION 101

STAY AWAY FROM SNAKES
The minute you realize a snake is in your arms run the other way
WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES TRYING TO SINK THEIR TEETH IN YOUR FLESH
Paul thought the snake was a stick to be used for keeping warm but instead it turned out to be a snake ready to kill
The minute you find out someone you thought is something else, its time to shake them off
Remember that Jesus has already put His foot on the snake when He went to Calvary
Genesis 3:15 NKJV
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
In other words, the devil might have thought he had Jesus but it was just a minor pin prick, but when Jesus bruised his head, He put His foot on him and declared victory. Which means we have victory!!
5. If a snake does bite, learn how to shake it off
Paul shook that snake off into the fire
We can shake our snakes off the same way
Psalm 91:13 NKJV
You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
Hebrews 12:29 NKJV
For our God is a consuming fire.
LOOK AT SOMEBODY AND SAY SHAKE IT OFF!!
LOOK AT SOMEBODY AND SAY SHAKE IT OFF!!
EVERY HATER - SHAKE IT OFF
EVERY BACK BITER - SHAKE IT OFF
EVERY TROUBLE MAKER - SHAKE IT OFF
EVERY BACKSTABBER - SHAKE IT OFF

1. They first look on him as a murderer (28:1–4).

The crisis (28:1–3): Paul is bitten by a poisonous snake.
The conclusion (28:4) : The people say, “A murderer, no doubt! Though he escaped the sea, justice will not permit him to live.”

2. They finally look on him as a god (28:5–6): When nothing happens to the apostle, they conclude that he is a god of some sort.

B. The apostle and the politician on the island (28:7–10): Paul meets the governor, Publius.

Paul heals Publius’s father (28:7–8): He is delivered from fever and dysentery.
Paul heals Publius’s people (28:9–10): Soon the other sick people on the island come and are also healed.
