Introduction: Coach Isamu Sakamoto

He made me practice my run for 2 months
He made me practice my roundoff for 3 months
Sometimes we want to rush to the next thing before we master the first thing.

Big Idea: What’s first determines what’s next

Jesus tells us this when he says...
Matthew 6:33 ESV
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Solomon was challenged to do the same
1 Chronicles 28:8–9 NLT
“So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel—the Lord’s assembly—I give you this charge. Be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, so that you may continue to possess this good land and leave it to your children as a permanent inheritance. “And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
1 Chronicles

What’s first determines what’s next

Explain:

David’s leadership is about to be passed onto his son
The promise was simple: Keep ME first and you’ll be blessed
Solomon was doing great…2 Divine encounters with God
But then something shifts in Solomon
His priorities begin to change:
1 Kings 11:9–11 NLT
The Lord was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. He had warned Solomon specifically about worshiping other gods, but Solomon did not listen to the Lord’s command. So now the Lord said to him, “Since you have not kept my covenant and have disobeyed my decrees, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants.
1 Kings 11:9-11

What’s FIRST determines what’s Next

Solomon was told to stay away from 3 specific things:
Don’t build a massive army
Don’t acquire many wives
Don’t acquire excessive wealth for himself
Solomon’s FIRST (priorities) changed and so what came next was God’s correction...

Story: I always wanted what was NEXT

I wanted to know when I would meet my wife NEXT
I wanted to know when I would find my calling NEXT
I wanted to know when I would find my job NEXT
But God was trying to get me to focus on what was FIRST

Application:

Are you thinking about what is NEXT or are you thinking about what’s FIRST in your life?
What’s next for me in my job or career?
What’s next for me in my relationship…husband? wife?
What’s next for me in my ministry or church?
Make God the #1 priority in your life and HE promises to show you what’s NEXT...

Conclusion: Broom and Balance

Broom and Balance....where is my focus?

What’s FIRST determines what’s NEXT?
