End with a story...
In the second and third centuries after the accounts in the book of Acts.
Plagues devastated the Roman empire...
At its height the epidemic is estimated to have killed 5,000 people a day in the city of Rome alone. Among them were two Roman emperors.
And our God put His people on mission in this place to further ignite the spread of Chrstianity.
It seemed like everyone in these areas was dying...people either had sickness and died or were fleeing and running from these diseases. Leaving behind family members and belongings.
And guess who stayed. This new group of people on a mission…the Christians.
They stayed and took care of the sick.
And many of them cared the sick back to health..but caught the disease themselves and died.
They took that burden and suffering from the sick and onto their very lives.
But another exchange took place…they transferred something back to these sick people...
Historically, the population of born-again believers went from 3% to 50%...
Because of the way the Christians gave their lives to the mission of Jesus Christ...for the glory of God not only in the service of others…but by the spread of the Gospel.
We have the same two promises that they had church.
We live in a culture where the percentage of truly born-again believers is low and falling…like the plague…you might say.
What if we…as disciples of Christ...just believe his promises.
