Set the stage...
A King’s Dream
(Daniel 2:1-5)
King Neb had dreams that left him extremely troubled.
He couldn’t sleep.
Ever been troubled by something that kept you from sleeping?
Neb wanted answers so he called for the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and Chaldeans - his wise men.
“I had a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.”
Unrealistic Demands
King Neb makes an impossible request.
No person can do what the king asked.
“Tell my my dream and the interpretation of my dream.”
Options:
He knew the dream.
He didn’t know the dream.
The dream was uncertain - couldn’t quite remember all the details.
Notice the response of the wise men:
Slide: Daniel 2:11
Neb is furious and orders all the wise men to be destroyed.
Here the story changes to Daniel.
Daniel replied with prudence and discretion -
Prudence is the ability to govern or discipline oneself.
Discretion is wisdom & understanding.
Lets pick up the story… Dan 2:13
Daniel 2:13-45
Daniel received the dream from God and blessed God.
Vs 20- 23 is a comparison to gods of Babylon and the true God.
He changes times and seasons.
Removes kings and set up kings.
Gives wisdom to the wise
Knowledge to those who have understanding.
Reveals deep and hidden things.
Knows what is in the darkness.
Light dwell with him.
The one who has wisdom and might (20) gave Daniel wisdom and might (23).
Slide: YHWY is glorified
YHWH is God of Heavens.
vs 27 - No person can do what the king asked.
vs 28 - but… there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.
Babylonian gods cannot do what YHWH can do.
Here again Daniel is contrasting his God to the deities of Babylon who supposedly set the times and seasons by the movements of the sun, moon, and stars.
Daniel’s God could change these.
Daniel takes no credit.
vs 30
The dream and interpretation...
Kingdoms come and go!
Babylon
Medo-Persian - Cyrus the Great
Greece - Alexander the Great
Rome - Caesars
Unknown...
The last kingdom (toes) is still future (My opinion).
They represent an alliance that will not be strong.
Iron/Clay don't mix and this kingdom will be tenuous and fractured.
Our government, our “kingdom” won’t last either.
Imperfect people
Self-serving
Each kingdom was inferior to the one preceding it, but that did not stop the stronger from giving over to the weaker.
No matter our views of kingdoms, US for example, they are not an everlasting kingdom.
They are only temporary.
A new kingdom is coming!
The Everlasting Kingdom
Read verse 44
The vision of a kingdom that will never be destroyed is future and yet, I think, a comfort to the Jews.
Though they would be sent into exile, God has a plan.
Kings come and go.
Kingdoms come and go.
God's kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
Neb is shocked!
Vs 47 - God is God of gods and Lord of kings.
Daniel is made ruler over province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men.
How should we respond?
Remember who is in control.
Daniel writes in hindsight… not a diary of events.
God was in control of the events.
God is still in control.
