Let’s all stand for the reading of God’s word...
Psalm 84:9–12 NKJV
O God, behold our shield, And look upon the face of Your anointed. For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. Let’s all stand for the reading of God’s Word. Turn with me to ….Let’s read verses 8-12
KJV -
9 Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.
10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
We thank you for demonstrating your love to us perfectly. We thank you for providing each of your assembly’s strength and protection to take part in kingdom work you are orchestrating in Hawaii and around the world.
As we look into your word we ask for you to teach us what you’d have us to learn. Give us a desire not only to hear your word but to do it. Help us to trust you with every aspect of our lives for your honor and glory and for our eternal good. We thank you for your grace toward us in every breath we take.
In Jesus Name I pray,
Amen.

Introduction

When something is taken away from you, if you love it, you will long for it. You will miss it. You will think about it and hope for a time when you can be with that which was taken from you.
This is the case of this psalm. The writer….who I believe to be David was not able to attend worship as normal. For some reason he was not able to be in the Lord’s house the way he normally was.
This was a cause for concern.
This was on his heart.
He wrote from a heart that was missing something it had come to love very much.
This may have happened when David had to flee jerusalem because his sin with bathsheba had consequences of a very disfunctional family.
One in which a brother raped his sister,
David’s own son plotted to take away the throne from his father
And Absolom kept listening to the wrong advice
And so in all this dysfunction…..David is missing the most important thing in His life…...No its not his family. That’s the natural go to most important thing in our life right….family first we say….but
David missed …...
the ability to Worship God properly.
The ability to go to the tabernacle
The ability to do what he know God was pleased with and commanded.

KJV - 10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

What makes a man say what is said in verse 10?
What would make a person say a day in the Lord’s courts is better than a thousand!
Notice he’s saying just a day!
Not a week, not a month, not a year but one single day is BETTER than a 1000 elsewhere.
Think about it…….this heart is focused on GOD.
Not Family
Not entertainment
Not His Job
Not the next vacations….
Not even his Wife….or wives in his case….
He longs to be in the Lord’s house.
Listen to this…...He Does Not Take It for Granted
He says he’d rather be a doorkeeper where the Lord is rather than be inside a den of wickedness……
WHen I think of a den of wickeness I think of Vegas, I think of these places we pass everyday where worldly people go after work to “have a good time” We live in a great state but our reputation as a strong supporter of Sin City is not something to be proud of. For the believer
A doorkeeper is a lowly job. Its not even inside but that’s better to the Psalmist. So what type of person is this?????
So the person who thinks like the psalmist is I would describe three ways
First, the person like the psalmist is .....

A Person who is Spiritually Minded ()

KJV - 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
David was spiritually minded….
Moses was spiritually minded for God’s word says that
KJV - 24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Consider that as a faithful follower of Jesus we are promised more than just a day with the Lord but an eternity….when we trust him we know …...
KJV - 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Secondly the person like the psalmist who would rather be a doorkeeper is .....

A person who has confidence in God because of what he’s done in the past.

David remembered the Lord’s mighty works of the past and it gave him confidence for the present and future.....remember what he said regarding facing Goliath....
1 Samuel 17:33–37 NKJV
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
Thirdly the person who is like the psalmist is a person who believes what verse 11 says......

The Doorkeeper is A person who believes verse 11

KJV - 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

So the person that can say verse 10 is the one who
believes that God is a sun
Believes God is a shield
Believes God gives grace
Believes God gives Glory
Believes God will not hold back anything good from those who walk uprightly
That’s the person who truly values every opportunity to Worship God.
So as we consider verse 11 I have two questions we must all consider
The answer to these questions can reveal how much you really believe God is good. We say that he is Good….we sing that He is so Good so we must consider every situation in life and ask these questions….
Two Key Questions you should consider:

Question 1: Is there something good in your life that you want to happen?

Is there anything your life that you think is a good thing that hasn’t happened but you want it to happen….

Question 2: Is there something bad in your life you want taken away?

So is there a good thing that you feel has been withheld then you are not content.
So if there is something you view as bad in your life then you are not content.
Brothers and Sisters we have an enemy who is an extreme liar….. KJV - 44 ………... He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
And so one of the basic tricks of the Devil is to convince you, Believer, that God is withholding something Good from you OR that God has allowed something in your life without good eternal value.
Now you may have noticed I choose my words carefully….”good eternal value” is key because the trials that come into our lives are ordained by God and they are not by accident
They are not bad luck
They are not poor fortune
They are designed with our ETERNAL Good in mind….
My mom sings a song by Ron Hamilton called “Rejoice in the Lord”.. do you know this song???? Raise your hand if you know this song? .it says..
God never moves without purpose or plan
When trying His servant and molding a man.
Give thanks to the LORD though your testing seems long;
In darkness He giveth a song.
(GO TO)
I could not see through the shadows ahead;
So I looked at the cross of my Savior instead.
I bowed to the will of the Master that day;
Then peace came and tears fled away.
(GO TO)
Now I can see testing comes from above;
God strengthens His children and purges in love.
My Father knows best, and I trust in His care;
Through purging more fruit I will bear.
O Rejoice in the LORD
He makes no mistake,
He knoweth the end of each path that I take,
For when I am tried
And purified,
I shall come forth as gold.
And so this is a verse we must commit to memory...we must believe it in all circumstances. THis is a verse to run to when you are tempted to doubt God’s goodness….
You see we must be content in order to stay focused on God. In order to be satisfied with His plan for our life...if we are not content we will stray away and try to find satisfaction in something else...something empty
Let’s remember what God is doing when there is something in our life we wish would go away.....
James 2:2–4 NKJV
For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
James 1:2–4 NKJV
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
KJV - 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
God wants us to be complete in Him. In order for that to happen we must believe some things….
Psalm 84:9 NKJV
O God, behold our shield, And look upon the face of Your anointed.

To Be Complete we must Believe the LORD God is a Sun (Ps 84:11)

We Must Believe God saves, sanctifies, and empowers us (Ps 27:1)

[ KJV] 1 [[[A Psalm] of David.]] The LORD [is] my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Because God is the one who gives us guidance about choices we need to worry about anything. We need not worry about wicked men
Because God is our light we can proceed with confidence.
Without the sun we die
Without the sun we are in the dark
Without the sun we can not grow

You Must Believe God is a permanent light….he is everlasting (, )

[ KJV] 19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.\
We know is the New Jerusalem we will realize the fulfillment of our God being a light….
KJV - 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

You Must Believe The Lord heals us from ALL our sickness ()

all means all. Spiritual sickness is basically unbelief God can do something...
IF we don’t believe God can do it then we will seek answers elsewhere....and it will drive us crazy!
We must remember what says....
Malachi 4:2 NKJV
But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.
[ KJV] 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
Many psychological illnesses are caused by rejecting God. When you reject God it leads to darkness and that darkness leads to separation from God....Remember the sin we discussed last night....sin takes us away from blessings and away from God’s protection! Remember what God’s word says in that....
NLT - 28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God's justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.
And So we must believe that God is a Sun…and then we must believe....

The Lord is our Shield (, )

God is ready to help his special people...his children

God is ready to help his special people...his children
KJV - 9 O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. 10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. 11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

God is able to protect us from all danger spiritual and physical. (Ps 119:114)

KJV - 114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
What is a buckler...study this it may provide more depth on God’s protection...
KJV - 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

You Must Believe that God is Gracious (Psalm 84:11)

The psalmist knew about the grace of God….It was by God’s grace that he was made a king
KJV - 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

It’s by God’s grace you are called to be in a special relationship with God through Jesus the Head of the Church.

KJV - 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
The Lord Will Give Glory
DAvid knew what is was to receive Glory…..after he killed Goliath he was a hero….
KJV - 5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants. 6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. 7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
God gave David the victory of Goliath and there is glory in victory….
God can give us victory over the giants in our life….he has great rewards for overcomers..
KJV - 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. KJV - 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
When God gives us the victory over sin we are admired by others. God get’s the glory but we receive some glory by being associated with the all powerful God who gave us the strength to over come.
God wants us to have some glory….he want us to overcome!
Look at the blessings that an overcomer is promised in Rev chapter 2

Overcomer (, )

KJV - 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
, , , KJV -
7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. ...
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. ...
17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. ...
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
, , KJV -
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. ...
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
... 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
KJV - 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
In the Lord’s church we are in the best position for glory….
NKJV - 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
God gives glory….he wants you to want his gifts…..do you?
These blessings that an overcomer receives are all based on God’s grace and they are all Good! Look at the last part
Psalm 84:11 NKJV
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.

Blessings for the Obedient: No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
God is a giver of good ….Jesus is a giver….

Jesus gave himself for the church (Eph 5:25)

NKJV - 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
Because of Christ we are in a special relationship….
We are given a promise
Then we are given a condition.
The promise: No good thing will he withhold
The condition: Walking uprightly
Remember the character of the one who makes this promise..
He is faithful
He is a light
He is a shield
He is your defender
He has bestowed favor
He was promised glory
In light of all these facts…..think about this promise...We have no reason to believe God will withhold anything good from us
You may ask….Brother Andy this is an old testament verse…..we are living under the new covenant….well let’s look at
NKJV - 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Promise: All things work together for good
Condition: Love God….be obedient in all things
We must have the mindset that all things are working together for my Good. This is what allowed Paul to Sing in the philippian jail
This is what allowed him to keep on encouraging others to have Joy when he was a roman prisoner
This same belief drove Job to say KJV - 15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him
Job, Paul, The Hebrew Boys...they were not fair weather believers.
They were not weak minded...they could endure tough things
2 Timothy 2:3 NKJV
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
KJV - 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
KJV - 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
I like this translation which says: NLT - 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
Three implication in the second half of :
Psalm 84:11 NKJV
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.

God is the one doing the withholding.

If there is something in our life we believe is a good thing and we are not getting it we must remember this verse and remember the Lord is the one who is not giving that to me.
God is the withholder

God’s Timing is Perfect

Some of the good things that God withholds are being withheld not because they are sinful but because the timing is not right. We need patience to wait.
A husband is a good thing….some of you don’t have a spouse yet although you may be praying for one because its not a good time for you to have one and God has not chosen to give you one yet….so God in Love keeps back...he refrains from giving
Illustration: Driver’s license….for a small child….license given too early can lead to destruction and suffering. rr
All the hero’s of faith were looking forward to good things but God had better things in store:
Hebrews 11:39–40 NKJV
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
KJV - 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
IF there is something there is good that you are not getting you must trust that God will give you something better or that he’ll give you that which is good at another time!

God Allows Bad For our Eternal Good

There are things that occur in our lives….God did not with hold…..and it appears to be a bad thing. ….in the long run it will be good.
The key is timing. God knows the right amount and the right types of trials we can handle. He loves us. He is the giver of life.
Example of Lazurus….. tells us that Lazarus died. To Mary and Martha and others it appeared that God was with holding good from them. A good thing for them would have been for Lazarus to live. God had something better in mind.
Illustration: Joseph...was it a good thing he was sold to slavery by his brothers? It looked bad at the time but in the end it was a good thing becuase at the right time Joseph was able to save his family. All the years of heartache that Isaac went through were worth it. All the pain Josephs’ mother went through because God had a plan.
Illustration: When Jesus told the desciples he would go away….
: NKJV - 7 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
It didn’t appear as a good thing for Christ to go away...but what was better is that he went away and he sent the Holy Spirit to help every church.
The devil wants you to read this verse “no good thing will he withhold from you who walk uprightly and say...This is not true….that is the temptation.
We must see the tricks of the devil. We don’t know the end of the story….we are in the middle of it but if we trust and never doubt….he will surely bring us out. Take you burden to the Lord and leave it there. Only Trust Him.
Now there is a condition we need to consider:
Phl 4:19 NKJV - 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
KJV - 1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

God is able to make us the overcomer he wants for us to be ()

KJV - 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

God will provide every need. He was all power and all resources. ()

So the condition we need to meet is one of more than being saved. Are you obedient. Are you walking with integrity.
Are your motives right….this is a heart issue. Walking uprightly has to do with our hearts….
NKJV - 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
If we are not walking uprightly is can be a reason something good is not being given to us at that time. IF we are not walking uprightly We don’t meet the conditions of being blessed.
Your motive may be wrong.
Is there knowns sin in my life I’m not dealing with.
Cup Illustration: IF a cup is not upright it can’t receive good things.
We must be prepared to receive God’s blessings.

You Must Trust God to walk uprightly and Receive God’s Best Blessings ()

Psalm 84:12 NKJV
O Lord of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You!
God wants us to live blamless lives and do what is right. When we do this he protects us. He takes care of us. We need to be dishonest to get ahead. It is better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich. God rescues those who are upright but cheaters and liers will be suddenly destroyed. When we walk uprightly we want to hear God’s words. We long to be in his house which brings us full circle back to the text.
Walk uprightly and live for God an exciting life full of ups and downs in your life that will bring God the Glory and allow you to have an abundant entrace into the kingdom of God!
Prayer 1
KJV - 10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. 3
A doorkeeper is a lowly job. Its not even inside but that’s better to the Psalmist. So what type of person is this????? 4
So the person who thinks like this is….. 4
A Person who is spiritually Minded () 4
A person who has confidence in God because of what he’s done in the past. 5
A person who believes verse 11 5
KJV - 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. 5
Two Key Questions you should consider: 6
would find my words comforting.
God saves us and sanctifies us...he empowers us 8
God is a permanent light….he is everlasting 8
The Lord heals us from all our sickness 9
The Lord is a Shield 10
God is ready to help his special people...his children 10

? What is a buckler...study this it may provide more depth on God’s protection... 10
The Lord Will give Grace 10
The psalmist knew about the grace of God….It was by God’s grace that he was made a king 10
It’s by God’s grace you are called to be in a special relationship with God through Jesus the Head of the Church. 11

God is the one doing the withholding. 16
2. Some of the good things that God withholds are being withheld not because they are sinful but because the timing is not right. We need patience to wait. 16
3. The third implication 17
There are things that occur in our lives….God did not with hold…..and it appears to be a bad thing. ….in the long run it will be good. 17
NLT - 2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
NLT - 7 He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
, NLT - 6 Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich. ... 18 The blameless will be rescued from harm, but the crooked will be suddenly destroyed.
NLT - 7 Should you talk that way, O family of Israel? Will the LORD's Spirit have patience with such behavior? If you would do what is right, you would find my words comforting.
