  • Ask:  What is the #1 purpose of the church?

Read  Matthew 28:19-20

  • Ask:  What are some of the instructions given in those passages?  Answers: make disciples, baptize, and teach them to observe commandments.

  • Ask: What is the #1 reason why people get saved?

  • Ask: Is going to heaven the only goal of becoming a Christian?

If salvation is only about going to heaven when we die, then we would drop dead the minute we are saved!  A relationship with Christ is not just about us. God wants us to be a part of something much larger than ourselves.  The task we have been given is to show the world what God is like. His plan is to use the church to spread the good news.

What are some of the ways we do we do this?

Read I Corinthians 12:12, 25-27

Just as a human body has parts that serve particular purposes, the "body of Christ", or the church, has individual parts that serve particular purposes.  Everything we do here should ultimately be done to accomplish one of these purposes.

The main responsibilities can be narrowed down to four:

1. To serve one another John 13:1-17 is the account of the Lord Jesus washing the feet of His disciples--a job normally done by the lowliest servant in the house. When He had finished, Jesus said in verse 14 (John 13:14). If God in the flesh was willing to humble Himself to serve others, how can we do any less?

2. To love and help one another I John 3:14-17 says, “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ lay down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?”

  • Ask the leaders with testimonies to come up and share.

3. To be kind, compassionate and forgiving to one another. Paul writes to the church at Ephesus in Ephesians 4:32. Need we say more?

4. To be a light to a dark world Matthew 5:14-16. Church isn’t about us; it is about reaching to a dark world and pointing them to Jesus!
