We have been talking about our mission to reach the lost. The word “mission” evoke thoughts of going to other lands, countries, or states, but cannot have the luxury of neglecting our Jerusalem, those around us; and much less those very near to us, our children.
Read Eph 6:4
As Christian parents, we have a very important, special, and delicate mission: to bring our children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (that they may know and fear the Lord).
To bring them up goes beyond feeding them.
“To bring them up” means to nourish, to provide for physical and spiritual needs, to bring up to maturity.
Many parents are good at providing for physical needs, but only a few provide for the spiritual needs.
What are the necessary elements to fulfill that mission?

The teaching of the Word.

The instruction has to do with providing the mental knowledge of the words of the Lord.
νουθεσία: to impart teaching or understanding (in the mind and heart).
Our objective or mission is that they believe in the Lord, but “How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?”
They need to hear God’s words, not once, but thru constant repetition.

Thru constant repetition.

From the very beginning of the written word, the Lord, thru Moses, commanded parents to constantly repeat His commandments to their children.
Deuteronomy 6:5–7 NASB95
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
It is not the pastor’s or the Sunday School teacher’s responsibility, but the parents’.
Notice that it doesn’t say “to your students”, but to your children; it doesn’t say “when you go to church”, but in your house, wherever you go with them, and night and morning.
Repetition is key to memorization...
It is better that your children say to you “you already told me that so many times!” than “you never told me that!”
“Diligently” is the opposite of negligently. “Diligently” implies dedication, attention, care in teaching them the word.
Do you put to that teaching the same diligence that you put to your job?

The training.

παιδεία

παιδεία

παιδείαb, ας f: to train someone in accordance with proper rules of conduct and behavior

bring them up in the discipline…of the Lord
The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament παιδεύω, παιδεία, παιδευτής, ἀπαίδευτος, παιδαγωγός

παιδεία

παιδεία: to train someone in accordance with proper rules of conduct and behavior. (Greek-English Lexicon of NT)
While the instruction is more like the theory, the discipline is more like the practice.
This training is more important than any other training you may give them. I have know parents who train their children in soccer, football, boxing, martial arts, etc., but they do not train (discipline) them in the Lord.

Training them to follow the rules.

We must teach our children that rules are for their benefit. Someone who refuse to follow rules will become a cheater. They will cheat in school, sports, marriage, and society.
Every society, every, home, every family, and every church has rules. Without them, they cannot function adequately or properly, as the definition of training express it.
Disobeying the rules must be always punished; otherwise we will be rearing future criminal instead of responsible citizens.
How to raise a Juvenile delinquent.
1. Begin with infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this way he will grow up to believe the world owes him a living.
2. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him think he’s cute. It will also encourage him to pick up “cuter phrases” that will blow off the top of your head later.
3. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21, and then let him “decide for himself.”
4. Avoid the use of the word “wrong.” It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him to believe later, when he is arrested for stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being persecuted.
5. Pick up everything he leaves lying around – books, shoes, clothes. Do everything for him so that he will be experienced in throwing all responsibility on others.
6. Let him read any printed matter he can get his hands on. Be careful that the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilized, but don’t worry about his mind feasting on garbage.
7. Quarrel frequently in the presence of your children. In this way they will not be too shocked when the home is broken up later.
8. Give the child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn his. Why should he have things as tough as you did?
9. Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort. See that every sensual desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harmful frustration.1. Begin with infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this way he will grow up to believe the world owes him a living.
10. Take his part against policemen, teachers, and neighbors. They are all prejudiced against your child.
3. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21, and then let him “decide for himself.”
11. When he gets into real trouble, apologize for yourself by saying, “I never could do anything with him.”

Training them to behave as Christians.

Our children must learn that their behavior must be different from the world’s. Things that may be accepted in the world are not necessarily acceptable in Christians. “Everybody does it” should never be a good reason to do it.
Behavior is Bible teaching applied to their lives. It is not their knowledge of the Bible that will make them different, but the application of it.
Proverbs 20:11 NASB95
It is by his deeds that a lad distinguishes himself If his conduct is pure and right.
We train them in behavior by rewarding them when they put into practice and punishing when they don’t.
We training in behavior by rewarding them when they put into practice and punishing when they don’t.

The example.

Here is the heart of the issue! Nothing is so powerful in the life of a child as the example of the parents.
If they do not see it in you, probably you will not see it them! They will not do what you tell them to do, but what they see you doing. You must teach them by example!
They will be brought up in the discipline and instruction of the by:

Seeing the importance you give to learning the Word.

Do they see you reading the Bible? If they see you everyday, that tells that listening from God is a priority.
Do they see you attending Sunday School? If they don’t, you are communicating to them. “that is not important!”
Do they see you studying by Bible?

Seeing you practicing what you believe.

Not practicing what we preach or claim to believe is hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is one of the things that discourage children the most.
Demanding them to do what they do not see you doing is not effective. On the contrary, that provokes them to anger!
Our good example gives you great authority to rebuke them or correct them.
Jesus taught with words and example:
John 13:15 NASB95
“For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
To Timothy and Titus, Paul exhorted to teach with their example:
1 Timothy 4:12 NASB95
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
12
7
Titus 2:7 NASB95
in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,
The parent’s mission will not be fulfilled unless they are good examples to their children.
