Into the Wild

Intro
For all of time before us the wilderness has always been something that “you just have to see for yourself” but with modern technology we can look up nearly any inch of this entire planet and have an Idea of what it looks like.
Normally it just leaves us with a fake satisfaction of what we wish we could see. Now I am not a huge outdoors man, and a lot of that has to do with a story of the time we got lost in New Mexico.
*Tell the Philmont Story (5 min) *
Tension
- *The Wild is unknown and uncomfortable, and the only way to experience it is by going into the wild and the unknown*
- Jesus leads us out to the unknown
- Now that story can really describe how our walk with Christ goes. The leader is my story said we should go, so we went. The leader said, we should stop for the night and we stopped. Then when the we thought we could get away with something that was seemingly so small, it turned into us getting lost.
- But who in the bible gives us a proper way to begin our journey when God calls us. Honestly, we don’t have to get far into the bible to find a great example and that’s with a man named Abraham in .
- The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you.” “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and whoever curses you I will curse and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he set out from Harran.
Truth
Abraham was an extremely normal person who thus far has lived an extremely normal life. He reminds me of my own father. A quiet guy who has a job that no one really cares to hear about and probably mostly kept to himself.
But when God spoke to Abraham the very first thing he said was “Go” because he knows that if we want to GROW then we must GO. If you want to be a wilderness survivalist like Bear Griles you don’t do it by sitting on your butt watching his TV show! Christianity is the same way, if you want to be a “good Christian” you don’t do it by sitting in a pew and ignoring the call.
But following the call is a scary thing! Normally we don’t know where we are going to end up when we get up and just go for God. Neither did Abraham! God didn’t call him and then an address and GPS came down from the heavens to show him which way to turn. BUT it was that first step to go that began a story that to this day we talk about and are inspired by.
Jesus says in “I have come than they may have life and have it to the full”. Today we hear this as “Live life to the fullest” but in the modern world what does that mean? I see it as let’s drink, lets sleep around, lets smoke, lets party. This is the original live life to the fullest and I can assure you that, that wasn’t what Jesus meant. Jesus is saying that “I am the Christ. I am the life and I am giving mine up so that they may have their own, and they will use that life to glorify me”. A lot of us start our lives doing a good job of living for God as a kid. Then we become Juniors, seniors in high school, start college and we think we have Jesus ALL figured out. We figure we can put Jesus to the side and pick him back up later when you’re a real adult. THAT’S NOT AT ALL WHAT HE WANTS! He wants us from the beginning to follow him. Don’t walk away from his campsite while you think he’s sleeping. **Tell the true story of Philmont**
Even though we think he’s asleep in his tent, and we can get away with something, he’s not. He’s still there. So, don’t ignore the mission that he wants you to be on.
Conclusion
So what step can you take? What step are you going to make? I encourage you to think about this in your break out groups tonight and if you feel like there is a step you need to take then take it! Talk about it tonight and commit to taking that step today. It could be as small as a prayer, it could be as big as a life long calling. No matter what it is, commit to do that tonight. Let me Pray
Prayer
Dear God, I pray for everyone in this room
