Deuteronomy 9:1–8 NKJV
1 “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ 3 Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you. 4 “Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people. 7 “Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8 Also in Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry enough with you to have destroyed you.
1 Timothy 1:15 NKJV
15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
Deuteronomy 9:1–6 NKJV
1 “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ 3 Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. As believers we want to say that we trust the Lord, but do our actions align with our beliefs?
Today, let’s take a look at this passage in Deuteronomy and learn from the OT which aspects are important to trusting the Lord over ourselves.
In doing so, we will see there is Good News from the law in placing our faith in trust in our Lord and Savior.
First truth:

We do what He says (9:1-3)

Deuteronomy 9:1–3 NKJV
1 “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ 3 Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.

They were to go

“cross over the Jordan today”
They really struggled with this. Check out the back end of chapter 9.
Deuteronomy 9:22–24 NKJV
22 “Also at Taberah and Massah and Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath. 23 Likewise, when the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and you did not believe Him nor obey His voice. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.
Deut. 9:22
None the less, they were called to go.
Do we see a similar command in the NT?

They were to take on a big task

“dispossess nations greater and mightier than you”
God straight up tells them that they are going to be facing a huge challenge in the Anakim.
Deuteronomy 2:10–11 NKJV
10 (The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. 11 They were also regarded as giants, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.
Do you know what sounds like a big task to me? Making disciples of all nations.
Deut. 2P:10-11
Aren’t you glad you can be a part of that by sharing the gospel right where you are?
Aren’t you glad you can be a part of making disciples through your Cooperative Program giving in your church?

They were to do something many of them may not have completely understood

“drive them out and destroy them quickly”
Let me show you what this looked like in the OT:
Deuteronomy 2:33–34 NKJV
33 And the Lord our God delivered him over to us; so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 34 We took all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining.
When He asks us to do something, that something might not look like anything we understand at the time.
I remember when God called me to the ministry.
I remembered asking Him how He was going to use someone like me how was scared to death of speaking in public.
Now I look back and see that each ministry experience is like a puzzle piece and all of them worked together for His glory.
Second truth:

We make sure our focus is upon Him (4-5)

Deuteronomy 9:4–5 NKJV
4 “Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
When our focus is on Him we:

Remember He is totally righteous

Deuteronomy 9:4 NKJV
4 “Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you.

Remember He doesn’t do things because we are righteous

We like to think that God will do things for us if we’ll just be good enough, help a neighbor out, or watch the carbs for a few weeks.
We does things according to His purpose, for His glory.
Deuteronomy 9:5 NKJV
5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Remember His holiness is to be taken seriously

Third and final truth:
“it is

We remember He receives the glory (6)

Deuteronomy 9:6 NKJV
6 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
Park Ave., you have freedom to trust the Lord in your personal and church lives.
He might be asking you personally to trust Him in a particular area in which you are struggling.
In the discipline of witnessing or
to live Biblically with the finances He’s given you or
even with a family member’s salvation like I talked about yesterday with my mom and dad.
Friends, remember that He receives all the glory. Our personal happiness isn’t His number one goal. He wants us to have the ability to worship Him regardless of our circumstances.
2 Corinthians 12:1–10 NKJV
1 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. 5 Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. 6 For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me. 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Friend do you need to
Brother or sister, is there an area in your live in which you need to trust the Lord?
Turn it over to Him and allow Him to work. Follow His leading.
Are you here tonight and need to receive Christ as your Savior?
