He’s Gone… I’m Going Fishing

Dads not here, we can do what we want now.
sometimes we get frustrated and just want to give up and quit.
sometimes we just want to go and do our own thing because we think maybe we have just blown it.
So what do we do, we resort to going back and doing what we know how to do.
John 21:1 ESV
After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way.
after this..
after what?
Mt
Matthew 28:16–20 ESV
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:10 ESV
Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
Mark 16:12 ESV
After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country.
Jesus had given the disciples a command of what He wanted them to do.
John 21:2 ESV
Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.
We have seven disciples here.
we see Peter as the leader, they were all together.
They are just standing around shooting the breeze, so what you gonna do now?
John 21:3 ESV
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Peter says, Im going fishing, and the other 6 disciples, they said we are going with you.
This is interesting here, because this isnt what they had been told to do.
but hey, Jesus isnt here, Hes left the building.
We dont see Him, Hes gone. so im going fishing.
Peter isnt so much talking about sport fishing or relaxing type fishing.
Hes says i’m going back to my old job, what i know to do for me.
A professional fisherman.
Notice that Peter is with 6 other disciples, and when he makes a decision to go the other join him.
Peter is the leader here, people are watching and with him, they will make their next move according to your move or action.
Peter goes fishing and they go with him.
Are you going somewhere where you shouldnt be going?
because if you are, you will probably be taking others with you.
Let us all remember this.
we are being watched and there are ones who are watching us in order for them to make their next move.
we are someones example.
John 21:3 ESV
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
notice here in end of vs 3,
they went out and got in the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
it was dark when they went.
It was dark when they went against the Lords commands.
They had entered darkness.
whenever we disobey the Lords commands, we always enter darkness of some form.
Also, notive they that they caught nothing!
If you decised to go back to where you came from, know that it will never be fruitful.
Walking in the dark will never produce fruit.
John 21:4 ESV
Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
Just as day was breaking.
Jesus stood on the shore… yet the disciples didnt know it was Jesus.
Why, they had been with Him for 3 1/2 years and didnt realise it was Him.
Well the disciples were in the dark, and when you are in the dark you loose discernment.
They couldnt discern it was Jesus due to their darkness they were in.
This shows me something.
When you are in a dark place, dont make decisions,
why?
Because we loose discernment.
We have a hard time in seeing what is the Lord and what isnt of the Lord.
John 21:5 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.”
verse 5,
You hard headed rascals, this isnt what i told you to do!
What did i tell you to do!
You only do what it is you want to do! Im sick with you!
Why wont you listen to me?
They did listen, but did they do?
Its like James said, dont be heares of the word only, but be doeres of the word.
if you listen and not do you are only deceiving yourselves James says.
Is this what Jesus says to the disciples?
Not at all, Its exactly what I would have said.
Hard headed rascals!!!!
What did Jesus say? Children....
He says Children...
When we dont obey the Lord we think Hes mad at us, He upset with us.
We think He is far from us, but all of these thoughts are far from the truth.
Jesus is always standing there, watching us the whole time.
He says, Children, have you had any susscess in the dark?
Whenever we are walking outside of the will of God we are walking in the dark.
And when we are in the dark, He will ask gently, Child? Have you had any sucess?
When we follow His commands, we walk dont walk in the darkness. we walk in the light.
Psalm 30:5 ESV
For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
Paslms 30 5
lam
Lamentations 3:22–23 ESV
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
vs 5, any sucess? NO
John 21:6 ESV
He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
Jesus says try it this way...
Throw the net on the right side of the boat.
The disciples follow His command and waht happened?
Why did Jesus tell them to throm on the rt side?
Because it was the right thing to do!
When ever Jesus tells us to do something, we can be sure it will always be the right thing to do!
What has The Lord told you to do?
Because if Jesus said it, its the right thing to do.
What happened when the disciples did what Jesus commanded of them?
John 21:6 ESV
He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
They were not able to haul it in.
Think with me here.
You go fishing and you catch a big one, real big one, whoever is with you will help you get it in the boat, there are 7 disciples here pulling at this net and they couldnt get it in the boat.
Why?
Because of the fish, they had caught a bunch of fish. Big ones!
I think of eph 3:20
Ephesians 3:20 ESV
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
God is able to do above what we think or ask.
He will not only meet our needs but exceed them!
John 21:7 ESV
That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
J
Peter put on his outter garment, for he was stripped for work.
Look at the feet washings .
John 13:3–4 ESV
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
John 13:4 ESV
rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
Now in
John 21:7 ESV
That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
In the foot washing we see that Jesus laid aside His outer garments to perform a task.
we see in 21 7 Peter had taken off his outer garments to perform a task as well.
We also see that Peter put his outer garment back on Just as we see Jesus do the same after He had completed the foot washing.
John 13:12 ESV
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
Sometimes it is nescary for us to lay aside something for a season or a time to do a task,
We like the other disciples were given a command ,
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We are told to take His gospel to the world,
I define world as being the world that The Lord has placed you.
If something is preventing you from doing a command that the Lord has given you maybe their is something you need to lay down for awhile to enable you to do it.
This dosent need to be something bad or un=biblical, just something that is preventing you from being able to do a task.
Its ok to pick it back up or to put it back on after the task is complete.
Peter and Jesus both did.
They had a task to do and they knew they had something that would keep them from being able do the job, so they laid it aside.
Is their something in your life that is keeping you from being a fishermen,
a fishermen for men?
John 21:7 ESV
That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.
Why is it that it was John who noticed jesus?
It says it was the disciple that Jesus loved, we know this was John.
John 13:25 NKJV
Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
John had laid back and laid his head on the chest of Jesus,
John was so close to Jesus that he heard His heart beat?
He was that close to Jesus!
This is whay He reconised Jesus!
The closer you are to Jesus, the quicker you will see Him!
I want you to see something else here.
John was so close to Jesus yet he was one of the 7 that did not follow Jesus commands.
John to was in the dark.
He chose to follow Peter insted of Jesus commands.
We can all get off track, and get caught in the dark.
Just know that Jesus is standing on the side watching and waiting.
Look for Him, Hes their.
The one that is the closest is the one that will reconise Him!
The only way we can have the discernment of knowing Jesus is by being close to Him.
How close are you to Jesus?
When you are close to Jesus you will have His heart.
How can you tell?
How do you think of the llost?
Are we just heares? We know they are lost but it dosent bother us that much.
Does it bother you over lost people?
We know we should care about the lost but do we really?
Matthew 9:36 ESV
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
This is the heart of Jesus, is this your heart?
To many Christians today are interested in Sunday, but little interest in bible study or worship.
They believe they will spend eternity in heaven worshipping and sitting at the feet of Jesus and whet better bible study can you get that that.
This is all true, but their is one thing you cant do in heaven.
You will never be able to bring people to Jesus in heaven!
This is what we are here for!
Why did peter throw himself in the water to swim to Jesus?
Why didnt he just come in with the disciples in the boat?
I think it was because Peter wanted to know if he was forgiven and couldnt wait to get to Jesus to find out.
It will actually be several verses away before Peter finds out.
8-9
John 21:8–9 ESV
The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread.
vs 9
they saw a charocoal fire with fish on it.
Dont Miss this!
While the disciples were out in the dark trying to get what they were after Jesus was on the bank and already had exactly what they wanted!
So many times what we are looking for isnt where we are looking.
Its with Jesus is where we will find it!
Jesus had the fish, its what they wanted.
But
Ephesians 3:20 ESV
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
Not only did Jesus have them fish in the fire cooking for them,
He had bread for them as well!
John 21:10 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”
John 21:11 ESV
So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.
vs 11, Peter went out and hauled in the net full of big fish.
153 of them.
Do you see this!!
Look at vs 6
John 21:6 ESV
He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
all the disciples were not able to haul in the net full of fish but now Peter goes by him self and is able to haul in the net full of fish, 153 of them.
How is this possible?
Its simple… What The Lord commands us to do the Lord will enable us to do.
why 153 fish?
This has been a question for a long time.
We know today that the marine people have indentified over 30k fish species.
But back in this day there were only 153 of them known to man.
I believe Jesus was telling the disciples that His net would work for all species of fish.
The net being His Gospel, it would work for all man kind in the world.
Vs 11 tells us that the net wasnt torn.
This shows me we are safe in the Lords net.
In His Gospel.
1 Peter 1:5 ESV
who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
John 18:9 ESV
This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”
Sometimes we might think we wont make it, but we did and this is why.153 fish shows me that we are all counted.
I think sometimes people wonder if God even knows who they are.
God nows, He has counted all of us.
The sherpherd in tells us after he counted the sheep one was missing so he went out and found it.
God knows each of you.
No ne is here today by mstake, you are here for a reason.
John 21:12 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.
Jesus says come to me and have breakfast.
Come to me and eat and you will never hunger again Jesus is saying.
You will never hunger for the things of the world again.
Are you satisfied with Jesus or is it Jesus + something else.
If God took everything away from you would you be satisfied with jesus only?
The Lord Give it.
The Lord Take away.
We can all say this.
But can we say it as Job said it.
and Blessed it be the Name of The Lord.
Are you looking for Love?
God is Love
Are You looking for Peace?
God is Peace
Are you Looking for Joy?
True Joy is in The Lord.
