Introduction
Have you ever, as you have gotten to know someone, seen something new and different about them that you never realized before?
...
Today’s story is not quite like that...
But, for the disciples, it is...
They knew Jesus was...
The Messiah (Christ)
The Son of the Living God
Able to do miraculous things
heal the sick
create food where there was only little
raise the dead
Yet they had not seen His glory. They did not yet really see Him as God the Son
This story calls to mind the story of Moses seeing the glory of God
Exodus 33:18–23 ESV
18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
Exposition One
Matthew 17:1 ESV
1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
Matthew 17:2 ESV
2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
Hydrogen and Oxegen
Toyota Mirai
Matthew 17:3 ESV
3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

I. Jesus is the Holy One who was foretold (1-3)

Response: _Believe and follow with confidence_
Matthew 17:4 ESV
4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Peter again
Reading parallel accounts makes clear that there is a certain amount of inappropriateness to this response
Matthew 17:5 ESV
5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
Matthew 17:6 ESV
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
Matthew 17:7 ESV
7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”
Matthew 17:8 ESV
8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

II. Jesus’ power is overwhelming yet you need not fear (4-8)

Why?
Because that power is ours, not that we own it but that we are protected and empowered by it
Matthew 17:9 ESV
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
This is the last time that Jesus tell them to not reveal the truth about Him
Why?
For the sake of His mission
Could raise nationalist Messianic expectation
Could lead to disappointment without the “sign of Jonah”
Relief, there is an “until” in this verse
“until...
Matthew 17:10 ESV
10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Response is basically, “why would you die if the world is restored”
They are still thinking wrong
Teaching or Scribes and Pharisees, in this case, is correct on one level
See...
Malachi 4:6 ESV
6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
About the return of Elijah
Jesus answers them...
Matthew 17:11 ESV
11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.
Matthew 17:12 ESV
12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.”
Matthew 17:13 ESV
13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

III. God’s plan has always been to restore all things but not how His people imagined (9-13)

The Gospel message is not just a message of personal salvation...
