When John says; “after me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.” John is not putting himself down just down wind. John Flavel said

Humility is not self flagellation but self forgetfulness.

Deprecation is focuses humility through psychology while flagellation focuses on humility through physicality.
Some practice humility by running themselves down while others practice humility through restriction.
Religious leaders in an attempt to create a more humble and holy follower had taken the 10 commandments and stretched it to 613 commandments.
God’s commandments were not given to inflict upon it adherents restriction but to infuse them with freedom. Freedom from what? This is found in the first commandment
And God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
The first commandment and the remaining 9 free us to self forgetfulness. God gave us these commandments to give us a focus. Your focus will determine who you are forgetting.
Most humility today is a false humility.
To even get near [humility], even for a moment, is like a drink of cold water to a man in a desert.
Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call “humble” nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smug person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody.
Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him.
If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.

The story is told of two women in Shanghai who were discussing the topic of pride and began to wonder if Hudson Taylor was ever tempted to be prideful because of his many accomplishments. One of the women decided to ask Taylor’s wife, Maria, about it. Maria promised the woman that she would find out. When Mrs. Taylor asked her husband if he was ever tempted to be proud, he was surprised. “Proud about what?” he asked. “About all of the things you have done,” his wife explained. Taylor responded, “I never knew I had done anything.”

Mark’s focus is not on a process but a person. We see this in his introduction to John; “John appeared.” Mark is saying that process without a person only develops the humility of a Pharisee.
Mark’s gospel does not explain John’s developmental journey as he introduces John by saying; “John appeared”. Mark is not interested in his readers knowing a process but a person. Mark is stating simply; when you met the person of Jesus this the by-product.
John’s diet nor his dress
You cannot develop humility by focusing on humility. You develop humility by focusing on the person who personified humility.
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

John’s development of humility, though not told by John, is told in Luke’s gospel.
If you and I are going to be humble followers with must be filled with the Holy Spirit.
for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

John, through the Holy Spirit, understood that his duty was not to be known but to make somebody known. John knew that he was not the point of his life but that his life was to be one that pointed to Christ.

John’s humility is not be seen in his dress or diet. This simply identified him as a prophet. Humility is not an appearance but a attitude. John humility is seen in his proclamation. He was a pointer not the point.
John’s gospel paints a portrait of John the Baptist secret to humility.
He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John knew from the beginning that His delight was direct others attention to the promised Old Testament Savior.
Humility does not relish the limelight but
D.L. Moody was the most famous evangelist in the world in the late 1800s. People came from around the world to attend his Bible Conferences in Northfield, Massachusetts. One year at large group of pastors from Europe were among the attendees. They were given rooms in the dormitory of the Bible school. As was the custom in Europe, the men put their shoes outside the door of their room, expecting them to be cleaned and polished by servants during the night.
Of course there were no servants in the American dorm, but as Moody was walking through the halls and praying for his guests, he saw the shoes and realized what had happened. He mentioned the problem to a few of his students, but none of them offered to help. Without another word, the great evangelist gathered up the shoes and took them back to his own room where he began to clean and polish each pair.
You and I are not called to be like John but to learn from John how to be like Jesus.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God and King of Heaven, had the right to honor, praise, and worship. Yet to be our Saviour, He laid all of His privileges aside and became a lowly servant. We often hear people talk of living as Jesus lived, and while He truly is the model for us to follow, many who speak of following Him are unwilling to give up their rights and reflect His humility. We will never be like Jesus unless we are humble and lowly.
