The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Ten: The Fifth Freedom (Galatians 5:13–26)

The conflict (vv. 16–17).

INTRODUCTION:

I- THE CONFLICT ()

Galatians 5:16–17 NLT
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

A- There are two opposing forces that seek to control the believer ().

1- The Holy Spirit:
a- The Holy Spirit comes to live in the believer continuously from the point of conversion. ().
Ephesians 1:13–14 NLT
13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. 14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
Ephesians 1:13 NLT
13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.
b- The Holy Spirit’s jobs are to Convict the lost and to guide the saved. (, ).
John 16:8–11 NLT
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
John 16:13–14 NLT
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
2- The fleshly nature:
a- We are born with the fleshly nature.
b- The fleshly nature cries out for the fulfillment of bodily and psychological appitites.
c- The fleshly nature, when allowed to control the life, seeks to make these appitites the primary focus of life.
().
Philippians 3:18–19 NLT
18 For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

B- The struggle between the two natures produces internal conflict ().

1- Even the mature Christian faces this conflict (, ).
Romans 7:15 NLT
15 I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.
Romans 7:19 NLT
19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.
2- Victory is not possible in our own strength and our own will.
a- Only by yielding control to the Spirit can we accomplish the desired end.

II- THE CONQUEST ().

Galatians 5:18 NLT
18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

A- The key to the conquest of the fleshly nature is following the direction of the Holy Spirit.

1- Following the leadership of the Holy Spirit (εἰ δὲ πνεύματι ἄγεσθε) enables the believer to choose not to allow the fleshly nature to dominate his life.
().
Romans 8:2 NLT
2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
εἰ δὲ πνεύματι ἄγεσθε)

B- Following the direction of the Holy Spirit also provides conquest over bondage to the law of Moses.

1- The law is not a guide to life, but a sentence for death.
().
1 Timothy 1:9 NLT
9 For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.

III- THE CRUCIFIXION (, ).

Galatians 5:24 NLT
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
Galatians 5:19–21 NLT
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19–21 NLT

Galatians 5:24 NLT
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

A- Following the dictates of the fleshly nature lead to destructive behavior ().

1- Sensual Sins:
Sexual Immorality
impurity
Lustful Pleasures
Drunkenness and Wild Parties
2- Superstitious Sins:
Idolatry
Witchcraft
3- Social Sins:
Hatred
Jealousy
Wrath
Strife
Seditions
Heresies
Murders
Drunkenness

B- Cucifixion of a fleshly-dictated lifestyle is the starting-point of spirit-directed living ().

Galatians 5:24 NLT
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
1- The fleshly nature must be crucified.
().
Galatians 2:19–20 NLT
19 For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. 20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
2- Notice that Paul does not tell us to crucify ourselves, which is impossible.
The flesh has already been crucified. We must believe and act on it.
