Luke 22:63–23:12 KJV 1900
63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. 66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. 1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. 5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. 7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. 8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. 12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
INTRO:
Referring to the Jewish authorities, One theologian wrote in The Trial and Death of Jesus Christ: “It may be said that they walked according to their light; but the light that was in them was darkness.”
Another theologian wrote“None so blind as those that will not see,”
“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light”
John 12:36 KJV 1900
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 1, p. 272). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
[63] IMAGINE the watching angels must have tightened their grip on their swords watching THIS!
the watching angels must have tightened their grip on their swords!
John 18:13 KJV 1900
13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
John 18:12 KJV 1900
12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
[64] the soldiers = temple guards who arrested Jesus—INTRO:? they are playing some sort of cruel type of version of Blind Man’s Bluff

He is “Son of God, He is infect the GRACE of God = but blindfolded Him smack Jesus/Grace about the FACE!
Its also a form of well known TORTURE used by the good guys & bad guys!
Matthew 26:67–68 KJV 1900
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, 68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
mat26 67-
“Thou......CHRIST” can You hear their mocking voice? Can YOU hear YOURS?
ILLS: remember the school bully. That might have been YOU or YOU were on wrong end of it, thats what WE see here
Jesus is in playground, being dressed up & bullied [every playground in this city does the same] if child has something different about them, older parent, anything the wickedness of heart heart can find, they will latch on to it straightaway!
Here they backhand Jesus, they slap HIM silly! “Who hit YOU baby Jesus”
YOU know everything, show YOUR power is stronger than OURS!
[65] We can only “IMAGINE” what else they did & I don’t want to even think about it b/c it was MY SIN, YOUR SIN that put Jesus in this situation.
can’t watch these comedians anymore, I love comedy, use His name in vain, mock Him, beat Him verbally TV
[66] this is not even the kangaroo court YET. That’s only starting now! It was totally illegal what happened thru the night based on their own laws & rules, they had to wait until SUN RISE!
Also according to their laws “their council” Jesus should have had a DEFENCE, He was allowed NONE!
“their council”
APPL: Don’t worry Jesus will be present at every PERSON’s day of Judgement, TRUE Justice will be handed down!
For non believer Jesus will be prosectuation & also the Judge! [no defence allowed] b/c too late now to TRUST Christ, YOU rejected Him on earth!
For Believer Jesus is the Judge [giving rewards] & HE’s also the defence!
Also according to their laws “their council” Jesus should have tried at TEMPLE.
Also according to their laws “their council” Jesus should have 2 more days before sentence was given by Jewish leadership, not on same day!
Also remember JESUS is up all NIGHT now, no sleep, He’s on a night shift that quickly moves into the WORSE JOB in history, death by crucifixion! NOBODY wants that on their CV. [Resume]
Mark 14:55 KJV 1900
55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
mark14
Only couple were found but the stories didn’t match up, some said Jesus claimed He would destroy & build the TEMPLE in 3 days.
[67]
Matthew 26:63 KJV 1900
63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
When GRACE is rejected no EVIDENCE is good enough!
Ask non believer “what evidence would work for you” MOSTLY say none! I don’t believe in God, ultimate unending Love , Grace, Mercy, Forgiveness, Justice, I don’t need that in this life or next!
[68]
[69] = He’s prophesying NOW! [69] Power in HEAVEN & EARTH = also they know “the Son of Man” title from book Daniel = Messiah
Called himself the “Son of Man” throughout this Gospel and that Son of Man refers to the superanatural figure of Daniel who receives authority from the Ancient of Days and rides the clouds like God ().

=1 Jesus predicts that he will eventually be seated at God’s right hand in heaven, an allusion to his approaching resurrection-ascension. =2 He claims to have authority from God, an authority he will exercise from this moment on.

[70] is there an echo in here? “WHAT” its the original QUESTION! [67]
[71] This guy is not denying He is the CHRIST, Son of Man & Son of GOD! [71]
Guilty, guilty, guilty, then H. Priest rent his clothes, sign of DEATH!
Guilty, guilty, guilty..... in their EYES!
Guilty from their “interpretation”
*Notice* Jesus supplies the testimony that brings about his conviction.
supplies the testimony that brings about his conviction. What the leadership has been unable to do, namely, to get convicting testimony against Jesus, the Lord brings against himself. In essence, Jesus is the witness the leadership sought and sends himself to the cross. Jesus, of course, spoke as he did because his claim is true
The Lord brings it upon himself. Jesus is the witness the leadership sought & sends himself to the cross.
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 578). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.
He is innocent of all CRIMES, it was the TRUTH that led Him to Death, it is the TRUTH that leads US to Death & Life if WE are found in JESUS!
He makes no effort to save his life by denying who he is.
He had accused himself. Their accusation against him was blasphemy—claiming equality with God
Blasphemy was punishable by death []
Barton, B., Comfort, P., Osborne, G., Taylor, L. K., & Veerman, D. (2001). Life Application New Testament Commentary (p. 352). Wheaton, IL: Tyndale.
The council could condemn Jesus to death, but they could not carry out the death penalty under Roman law. The Romans would have to condemn him

So the Sanhedrin sends him on to trial before the Roman governor Mr Pontius Pilate
He makes no effort to save his life by denying who he is. So the Sanhedrin sends him on to trial before the Roman governor
APPL: let everyone of US be very careful who WE say is guilty, Jesus had never SINNED in His life & they found Him guilty! Guilty by man’s interpretation!
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 578). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.

Before YOU & I cast down judgement, remember the human heart can see SIN when there is NO SIN! Justify before YOU Crucify!
Like a sheep going silently before its shearers and like a lamb headed for the slaughter, he faces death so others may have life
The trial of Jesus is really our trial
Look how low these guys will go!
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 579). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.
He stands where we ought to be standing. Without our sin he would not have been there.
John 18:28 KJV 1900
28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 579). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.
And in Jesus’ resurrection, he assumes a place at the right hand of the Father, so that his claims are vindicated. The judged becomes the judge
We all face the simple question: How will we respond to the Son of Man, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
We all face the simple question: How will we respond to the Son of Man, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
He is innocent always has been YOU & I are as guilty as SIN!
APPL: for soldiers, the way they TREAT JESUS is very SIMILAR to people WE meet all the time, who have no time for JESUS or religion as they SEE it & love to mock His life!
people who have no time for religion and love to mock its existence
Sin blinds people, Those who mock the faith are often those who could use it the most
1 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Those who mock the faith are often those who could use it the most

APPL: Civil courts, here were a tuff nut to crack, b/c thats the case with a hard heart! Thats WHY OUTREACH or evangelism is Work Holy Spirit!
Luke 23:50–51 KJV 1900
50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just: 51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
Holy Spirit was working in that ROOM!
[23:1] = They have FORCED the NEEDED piece into JIGSAW, I.E. the “mock trial” by Jewish Leadership!
But they created the whole JIGSAW puzzle, they made SURE JESUS fit perfectly GUILTY!
Pilate’s normal lived in Caesarea on the Mediterranean Sea, but he happened to be in Jerusalem b/c of the Passover festival. [large crowds in city celebration] Pilate and his soldiers came to help keep the peace
Pilate’s normal residence was in Caesarea on the Mediterranean Sea, but he happened to be in Jerusalem because of the Passover festival. With the large crowds who had flocked to the city for that celebration, Pilate and his soldiers came to help keep the peace
[2] = COMPLETE LIE! = Rejecting the TRUTH about God, rejecting the TRUTH for a LIE! Rejecting GRACE for YOUR own SPACE! “I have no room for God in my life”
[2] = COMPLETE LIE! = Rejecting the TRUTH about God, rejecting the TRUTH for a LIE! Rejecting GRACE for YOUR own SPACE! “I have no room for God in my life”
John 18:31 KJV 1900
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
john18
[3] = Jesus is VERY respectful to Pilate, but at same time not intimidated in the SLIGHTEST [YOU really do want Jesus on YOUR side!
[4]
1 Peter 2:22 KJV 1900
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
[5] = Pilate actually sees RIGHT thru is JIGSAW game by Jewish leadership, WE all know what it feels like to be USED!
They are USERS & Abusers, Hiding inside the idea of a pure religion (false)
Pilate is like “this guy is big threat?” who to Rome, to Jerusalem? Get a grip!
He has done nothing worthy of death. This should have been the end of the matter.
He has done nothing worthy of death. This should have been the end of the matter.
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 583). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.
[6-7] = Rejecting Grace can be pass the BUCK, pass the PARCEL!
Pilate thinks up a brilliant solution. He will send Jesus to the Jewish political leader, Herod
Bock, D. L. (1996). Luke (p. 583). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.
[8] Herod is “BUZZING” but Grace will only be accepted for a “MIRACLE” do something spectacular Jesus!
Does that sound firmilar? I come to church where there’s miracles! That’s where GRACE must be! That I’m willing to accept.
[9] He peppered him with questions. Jesus didn’t answer—not one word. The quick-fire round of questions!
Isaiah 53:7 KJV 1900
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, Yet he opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth.
[10] new angle of attack, same old TACTIC!
[11] They set Him at nought! If YOU & I are looking after NUMBER 1, then WE are setting JESUS to nought! To Zero!
They dressed HIM up like a BARBIE doll!
Do YOU & I dress up the GRACE of God to be something it is NOT? Oh I’m saved so I can dance of JESUS’ grave!
I can ignore the COMMANDS of Jesus, I can ignore the DUTY of the body of Christ?
John 15:22 KJV 1900
22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
Isaiah 1:18–19 KJV 1900
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

“IF” Lord doesn’t force people to SAVED! Or to SERVE Him!
Isaiah 61:10 KJV 1900
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Isaiah 61:11 KJV 1900
11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, And as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth Before all the nations.
[12] Such is the POWER of the GRACE of God, Jesus can bring PEACE during His Trial!
APPL: As the Lord draws His own people together in a common bond of love, so He draws His enemies together in a common bond of hatred
As the Lord draws His own people together in a common bond of love, so He draws His enemies together in a common bond of hatred
Neither Pilate nor Herod regard him as guilty [HE is falsely accused, HE is totally innocent of all CRIMES]
APPL: it should not shock US or surprise US today that people misunderstand Jesus!
When people are hostile to Jesus, they fail to understand him
We all know Pilate’s & Herod’s: they are the type that think Jesus is not guilty of anything, NICE GUY Jesus, I love HIM, but neither is He to be believed!
This shows a shocking lack of respect & shows no sign of the RESPONSE He deserves!
He is not guilty, but neither is he to be believed
If YOU & I or anyone in this CITY, Nation or world, know Jesus was innocent, sinless & fail to embrace HIM! ?????
APPL: When we are sharing Jesus, we can expect a wide array of responses to Him. Some will be decidedly hostile, while others will be more disinterested. But both are rejection.
Evangelism often requires patience. Who would have predicted Saul would become an ardent follower of Jesus?
When we engage in sharing Jesus, we can expect a wide array of responses to him. Some will be decidedly hostile, while others will be more disinterested, just as in the trial scene. But both constitute rejection. Evangelism often requires patience. At the same time, it is important to remember that even in the midst of rejection, the initial reaction may be no clue to the eventual response. Who would have predicted Saul would become an ardent follower of Jesus? Yet others may never change their minds. Our primary responsibility before the Lord is to continue to share him.
Yet others may never change their minds.
Our primary responsibility before the Lord is to continue to share him.
We may never know if the seed we plant today will sprout years later!

There may come a time when words become POINTLESS.
there may come a time when words become superfluous. All that has been said is on the record, and there is no need to say more. As Jesus went silent as the trial continued, so we sometimes may have to say in effect, “I have said it all; there is nothing more to add.” The process ultimately has to be left in God’s hands.

the story of the trial, Luke’s clear purpose was to get at the heart of the matter: Who is Jesus?
The trial and death of Jesus Christ revealed both the wicked heart of man and the gracious heart of God. When men were doing their worst, God was giving His best. “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound”
Romans 5:20 KJV 1900
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Jesus was not crucified because evil men decided to get Him out of the way. His crucifixion was “by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God”

APPL: Pilate kept looking for a loophole, but he found none, so had Jesus killed!
YOU & I are also in same BOAT if WE try everything to find a loophole to avoid OUR Saviour! No duty, no service only reasons/loopholes why we can’t obey!
Neither Pilate nor Herod regard him as guilty
