Sermon Message: Life Without God

The preacher, Solomon, wrote that “Everything Has Its Time” ():

To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven (v. 1):.A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace (v. 8).

But you will find that many us do not have time for God. Especially, before we were saved. The following illustration portraits many people mindset:

1. Man is foolish, disobedient, and deceived:

a) Foolish (thoughtless, dull, senseless, without understanding in spiritual matters; to be ignorant of God and unwise dealing with God.

i) Thoughtless: not applying his thoughts to God; not thinking through the truth about God.

ii) Dull: not being sharp in his thoughts about God.

iii) Senseless: not using good common sense about God.

iv) Without understanding: he does not have the right ideas or thoughts about God.

(1)“There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” ()

v) Ignorant of God: he does not know God.

vi) Unwise: he acts in a dangerously and foolishly.

Scriptures speaks this way about foolishness: He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. ()

b) Man is disobedient (he refuses to obey by not doing what one should)

i) He disobeys parents, civil authorities, civil laws, and the natural laws of nature – polluting and misusing everything about him.

ii) He disobeys the laws of personal duty as he walks day by day at home, in the workplace, and throughout his.

iii) Most tragic of all, in fact, the cause of all other disobedience is that he disobeys God and His Word, the very Person who can save him and who has laid down the commandment of life for man.

Walter Knight wrote:

One night, Canon Hay Aitkin preached to a large audience in Bristol, England, from the text, “Ye must be born again.” Horatio Bottomley, a fine, brilliant young fellow, listened with rapt attention. He was deeply moved. At the close of the message an invitation was given to the unsaved publicly to confess Christ and seek His mercy. Bottomley thought: “Not I. This is not for me, I’ll run my own life.”

He did run his own life. He made a fortune. He became the people’s hero. He was a champion of the rights of the common man. He exposed swindlers and vigorously prosecuted them.

When sixty-three years old, Bottomley, who had exposed the crimes of others, was himself found guilty of crime and sentenced to seven years in prison. Captain Prayer of the Church Army visited him in prison. He told Bottomley the story of his conversion. Said he: “Years ago I was in Colston Hall in Bristol, Canon Hay Aitkin preached on the text, “Ye must be born again.” I was convicted of sin and of my need of the Saviour. I accepted Christ and since that memorable time, Christ has been all and in all to me!”

Bottomley thought deeply. Then he said, “I, too, heard that searching message. I felt my great need of the Saviour, but I rejected Him.” Then he said remorsefully, “A life without God is a wasted life!”—Walter B. Knight

c) A person without God is deceived ( the word means to be misled and led astray) ; ; ; , ;

i) He is seduced and led astray by immoral and seductive persons.

(1)Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” ()

ii) He is seduced and led astray by false teaching and false systems of religion

(1)“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” ().

(2)“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: From such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” ().

iii) He is seduced and led astray by self

“For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself” ()

“But Not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” ()

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” ()

iv) He is seduced and led astray by evil, immoral, and unjust governments and states.

v) He is seduced and led astray by sin.

2. Man is a slave of lust and pleasure

a) Enslaved to the things of the world, things that damage the body, that make him greedy and selfish-that destroy his spirit and doom him to destruction.

“For time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries” ().

3. He lives in malice and envy ;

a) Malice: People who always look for the worst in other people and always pass on the worst about them. A person that is full with evil that also always ruining others by word or violence.

“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious” ().

b) Envy: A person covets what someone else has. He wants it so bad even if it means it has to be taken away from the other person.

i) Envy takes a terrible toll upon the life and body of a person.

(1)He does not have peace or happiness. He is dissatisfied with what he is and has, and always wanting more and more of what others have.

(2)Envy drives a person into crime and lawlessness in order to get what he craves.

(3)Envy leads to physical problems such as migraine headaches, high blood pressure, and ulcers.

(4)It causes emotional problems (neurosis of depression to psychotic behavior).

ii) “Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them” ()

4. Man is hateful and hated ;

a) Means our very nature is hateful and hated of God.

“For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination [extremely hated and disgusting] unto the Lord thy God” ().

“These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren” (Proverb 6:16-19).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” ().
