Love in relationships
Synopsis
Human love is ennobled by being patterned on God’s love for his people. It is also safeguarded by God’s commands.
The love between husband and wife
Conjugal love is commanded
(KJV 1900) — 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
See also ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
(KJV 1900) — 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
(KJV 1900) — 5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
(KJV 1900) — 18 Let thy fountain be blessed: And rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; Let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; And be thou ravished always with her love. 20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, And embrace the bosom of a stranger?
(KJV 1900) — 9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.
(KJV 1900) — 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
(KJV 1900) — 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
(KJV 1900) — 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
(KJV 1900) — 7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
It is patterned on God’s love for his people
;
(KJV 1900) — 5 For thy Maker is thine husband; The Lord of hosts is his name; And thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
(KJV 1900) — 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

(KJV 1900) — 5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin, So shall thy sons marry thee: And as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, So shall thy God rejoice over thee.
(KJV 1900) — 14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
(KJV 1900) — 8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord God, and thou becamest mine.
(KJV 1900) — 19 And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; Yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, And in lovingkindness, and in mercies.
(KJV 1900) — 2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
(KJV 1900) — 7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
The power of human love
(KJV 1900) — 6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, As a seal upon thine arm: For love is strong as death; Jealousy is cruel as the grave: The coals thereof are coals of fire, Which hath a most vehement flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, Neither can the floods drown it: If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, It would utterly be contemned.
See also ; ;
(KJV 1900) — 20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
(KJV 1900) — 30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
(KJV 1900) — 34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not regard any ransom; Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
